(Ci. 223- 8) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in garment hangers and covers for such hangers such as shown in my Letters Patent 2,853,217, dated September 23, 1958.

A principal object of the present invention is to provide an improved cover for a garment hanger, the cover being of rubber or stifiiy flexible plastic material and easily applied to and removed from the hook of a garment hanger to protect the hook and garments hung on the hanger from rust, to protect the hands of the user from injury, and to prevent siippage on the closet rod.

Garment hangers customarily made with metal hanging hooks tend to become rusty not only at the hook but at nearby points on the body of the hanger. This is due to the hook portion of the hanger being continuously exposed and out of contact and not covered by the supported garment. Such hangers also have a tendency to slip on the supporting rods.

An important object of the invention is to provide a cover for the hook portion of a garment hanger to protect the hook portion and adjacent portions of the hanger from rust and other foreign matter and to protect the supported garment.

Another object of the invention is to provide a cover for the hook portion of a garment hanger that is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and pleasing in appearance.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Referring in detail to the various views of the drawings, in FIG. 1 a garment hanger embodying the first form of the invention is shown and designated generally by the reference numeral 10. The hanger 10 has an inverted V'shaped body 12 for supporting a coat or other garment and a crossbar 14 for supporting trousers or the like. The body 12 and crossbar 14- are formed of wood but may be made of suitable plastic material.

A wire hook 16 has its shank portion 18 extending through an opening 24? in the apex portion of the body and is provided with a head 22 to prevent withdrawal through the opening.

In accordance with the present invention, a cover 24 is provided for the exposed portion of the hook 16. This cover consists of an elongated tube of stiflly flexible rubher or plastic material. One end of the tube is open and its other end is formed with an enlarged solid bulbous head 26 integral with the body of the tube. When the cover is in protective position on the hook, the open end of the tube seats on the upper edge of the apex portion of the body of the hanger around the shank of the hook. The other bulbous end 26 forms a seat for the free end, protects the fingers of the user from injury, serves as a handle or finger piece for pulling the cover off of the hook, and presents a pleasing appearance.

In FIGS. 3 and 4, a garment hanger 10 having an armate shaped body 12 of metal, wood, plastic or any other suitable material, has a transverse opening Zil midway its ends. A metal hook 16 is supported in the opening 20' and its exposed portion is protected by a cover 24 embodying a modified form of the invention. This form of cover 24 is similar to the cover 24 except that in place of a bulbous head 26 there is a separate bulbous cap 28 formed with a socketed portion 30 whereby the cap may be readily slipped on and oil? of the end of the cover body 24'.

The modified form of cover 25" shown in FIG. 5 diflers from the form 24 shown in FIGS. 3 and 4 in that the body of the cover is sectional consisting of a section 32 and a section 34-, the end of section 32 being flared and overlapping the end of section 34 as indicated at 36.

Another modified form of cover 24 is shown in FIGS. 6 to 9 inclusive. This form of cover differs from the form of cover 24' shown in FIG. 4 in that the open end of the body of the cover is enlarged forming an inverted L-shaped skirt portion 40 over one side of the body 12' of the hanger, continued under and across the bottom of body 12 and then upwardly forming an upright flange 42. On the other side, the open end of the body of the cover is continued over the top edge of the body 12' and downwardly over the other side forming a downwardly extending flange 44-. The skirt portion 40 may be fastened to the side of the body 12' of the hanger by adhesive or the like and may be stripped from the body of the hanger by engaging the

The modified form of cover 24* shown in FIG. 10 differs from the form of cover 24 of FIGS. 69 merely in that the body of the cover is sectional, consisting of

32 and 34*, similar to the sectional body of the cover 2 of FIG. 5.

In FIGS. 11 and 12, another modified form of cover 24 is shown. This cover is similar to the cover 24 of FIG. 10 except that in place of an inverted L-shaped skirt 40, a semi-circular skirt 50 covers the body 12 of the hanger, which skirt is turned inwardly under the edge of the body forming opposed flanges 52 holding the cover on the hanger.

One side 54 is formed with an integral extension 58 that is inserted through a slot 60 in the other side 54. The enlargement 54 prevents damage to the garment by the juncture between the body and hook of the hanger.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent A garment hanger having an arcuate-shaped body portion of substantially rectangular cross section with a transverse opening midway its ends, a metal hook having its shank extending through the transverse opening, the remainder of the hook protruding outwardly of the body portion and having a curved hooked portion, an enlargement on the end of the shank outwardly of the 4 body portion to prevent withdrawal of the hook through the opening, a protective sectional tube on the protruding portion of the hook with an outer section and an inner section, the inner end of the outer section being flared and overlapping the outer end of the inner section, a separate socketed cap on the end of the outer section adjacent the free end of the hook, and an arcuate plate lying on top of the body portion and secured to the opposite end of the inner section of the tube and having a pair of depending semicircular skirt portions covering both sides of the body portion each depending semi circular skirt portion having an inturned flange having an edge thereof free along its entire length and spaced from the opposite flange, said flanges extending underneath and engaging the bottom edge of the body portion for holding the tube on the hook.
