Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADOLPHUS LIEBE'NROTH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND IWAN VON AUW, 0F SAME PLACE.
:PAPER-FILE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,438, dated May 22, 1860.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADoLPHUs LIEBEN- ROTH, of the city and State of New York have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Files for Papers and Sheets of Fibrous Substances, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation oi the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this speciication, wherein- Figure l, is a perspective view of said file as inclosing a bundle of papers and Fig. 2, is an end view of the same.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
F iles for papers have heretofore been made by two straw boards or covers connected together by india rubber or elastic bands, and a flap or section at one end has been provided so that the indorsement upon the file of papers may be examined. In this case all the papers have to be slid into the file endwise, or else the elastic bands have to be stretched and passed over therespective ends of the papers. This operation involves a difficulty in inserting or withdrawing papers, and the elastic bands are liable to be broken when drawn over the ends of the file. My invention obviates all these difficulties and consists in the combi nation ot' elastic bands with covers provided with a tuck or tongue, whereby the papers can be placed within said file and the parts drawn around said papers and the tuck entered so as to hold the file together and inclose and compress the sheets of paper or other fibrous substances.
In the drawing 0 is one cover of the tile formed with the strap ZJ. c, c, are elastic bands passing to the other cover d, and e, e, are elastic bands to the tuck f; which tuck when in place is entered beneath the strap Z). The cover d, may be provided with the flap g by which the indorsement upon the papers may be inspected. It will now be seen that my said file can be opened for inserting and removing any papers, and that the elastic bands (c, c, e, 6,) are not exposed to any unnecessary strain in opening the tile, and the whole is far more durable and convenient than any other article with which I am acquainted.
These files are to be made of any size desired according to the character of the papers or sheets of brous material to be inclosed by them, and they might take said sheets in a fiat or folded form; and `when desired these files may be made in a narrow form like a band to surround the middle of a bundle of papers instead of tapes or strings heretofore in use. The shape of the tuck f and the manner of attaching and detaching may be varied to suit circumstances.
IVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination of the elastic bands (c, c, e, 6,) covers (a, d,) and tuck or attachment for the purposes and as specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this eighteenth day of April Witnesses:
LEMUEL IV. SERRELL, Cries. H. SMITH.
