CALZONE OF A SLIVER IN SPINNING MACHINES Filed July 18, 1955 DEVICE FOR ADJUSTING THE GAUGE, THICKNESS QR CROSS-SECTION June 3, 1958 United States Patent DEVICE FOR ADJUSTING THE GAUGE, THICK- NESS OR CROSS-SECTION OF A SLIVER IN SPIN- NING MACHINES This invention relates to a device for ad usting the gauge, thickness or cross-section of a sliver, which can be used in connection with any existing spinning machine.
The device according to this invention provides for varying the relative speed between the pair of cylinders feeding the sliver and the pair of drawing cylinders as variations in gauge, thickness or cross-section of the sliver occur as the latter travels through the region between feed cylinders and drawing cylinders.
The characteristic feature of the device according to this invention resides in the fact that a pair of gauge cylinders are interposed between the feed cylinders and drawing cylinders and measure the sliver thickness, acting through a hydraulic servo-control on a mechanism transmitting the rotation of the drawing cylinders to the feed cylinders, in order to vary the speed of the feed cylinders in accordance with the variations in thickness of the sliver.
In an embodiment of this invention the mechanism comprises a pair of cams fitted to the end of one of the drawing cylinders (or other member revolving at a speed proportional to the speed of the drawing cylinders) adapted to oscillate through conne ing rods performing a rectilinear movement one-way clutches keyed to both ends of the feed cylinders. As the sliver varies in thickness the hydraulic servo-control conveniently varies the inclination of the connection rods, hence the arm length by which they act on the one-way clutch and the mean rotating speed of re feed cylinders.
Further characteristic features of this invention will be understood from the following detailed description referring to the accompanying drawings which show diagrammatically and by way of example an embodiment thereof.

1 and 2 denotes the pair of cylinders feeding the fibre sliver N to a pair of drawing cylinders 3 and 4 performing a constant speed rotational movement.
Two heart-shaped cams 5 staggered through 180 to each other are fitted to the ends of the lower drawing cylinder 4. Alternatively, the cams may be fitted to any other part rotating at a speed proportional to the drawing cylinder speed.
The cams 5 each act upon a slide 6 guided for longitudinal displacement. The slides 6 each carry a pivot 7 for attachment of a connecting rod 8 having secured to its end a pivot 9 engaged by a slot it in an arm securedly fixed to the external member ll. of a one-way or ratchet clutch the internal member 12 of which is keyed to the end of the lower feed cylinder 2..
The constant speed rotation of the drawing cylinders 3, 4, hence of the cams 5 moves the connecting rods by rectilinear reciprocating motion, thereby oscillating the outer collars 11 of one-way clutches rotating the i 2,836,857 QQQ l 'atented June '3, 1958 2 lower cylinder 2 by pulses, this movement substantially approaching a continuous movement.
A pair of gauge cylinders 13, 1 are arranged intermediate the pairs of feed and drawing cylinders for measuring the thickness of the sliver and receive a constant speed rotational movement from machine parts not shown on the drawing. The shaft of the lower cylinder is stationary, while the top cylinder 14 is vertically displaceable dependently upon the variations in thickness of the sliver N, its end pivots each carrying an extension 15 acting on a beam 16 oscillating about a pivot 17. The beams 16 each act on a movable unit l3 enclosed within a sealed chamber 19 filled with liquid communicating through a conduit 20 with a vertically arranged hydraulic cylinder 21.
The cylinders 21 are arranged at the two connecting rods 8, their plungers 22 acting against the action of springs 23 on shoes guided for vertical movement each carrying a pivot 24 engaged by a slot 25 in its associated connecting rod 8.
Variations in thickness of the silver move the top cylinder in a vertical direction and displace liquid between the chamber 19 and cylinder 21. By way of example, as the thickness of the sliver N increases, the movable units 18 are lowered, liquid being forced towards 21, thereby lowering the plungers 22. The connecting rods 8 then reciprocate in the direction of the arrow 26 lowering their end pivots The longitudinal movement of the connecting rods under the action of the cams 5 causes through the increase in the arm length acting on the extension 10 of the collar ii the one-way clutch 12 to move angularly through a smaller width. In the end, the mean speed of the feed cylinders is reduced relatively to the speed of the drawing cylinders, whereby the sliver N is reduced in thickness down to the required value.
When the sliver N decreases in thickness below the predetermined value, the top cylinder 14 is lowered, thereby raising the movable units 13 and drawing liquid rom the cylinders 21 towards the chambers 19. The pistons 22 are then lifted carrying along the connecting rods 8 and drawing the pivots 5 of the connecting rods towards the centre of oscillation of the collars 11. In this case the rectilinear movement of the connecting rods 8 results in a wider angular movement of the collars ll, hence in an increase in mean speed of the feed cylinders relatively to the drawing cylinders, the thickness of the sliver N increasing up to the prescribed value.
The one-way clutches 11-42 keyed to the feed cylinders may be replaced by friction clutches. This alternative construction is not shown on the drawing.
What I claim is:
l. A sliver gauge adjusting device for spinning machines comprising a pair of drawing cylinders, a pair of feeding cylinders, and a pair of sliver gauging cylinders arranged intermediate of the said first mentioned pairs of cylinders, each of said pairs of cylinders having a lower cylinder and an upper cylinder superimposed thereupon, all cylinders having their axes arranged horizontally and parallel to each other, the lower cylinders of each pair being tangent to a common horizontal plane arranged above them, the upper cylinder of said pair of sliver gauging cylinders being a bodily movable cylinder, means for transmitting rotation from the lower drawing cylinder to the lower feeding cylinder, said means including a pair of alternately movable horizontally arranged connecting rods receiving alternating movement from the lower drawing cylinder and each operatively connected to the outer member of a one-way clutch having its inner member pivoted to one end of said lower feeding cylinder for producing alternate angular movements thereof, and means responsive to the bodily movements of the said u ppersliver gauging cylinder for producing the inclina .tion of said rod and for varying thereby the rated the a 7 transmission between said lower drawing and feeding cylinders. 1 25A sliver gauge a being tangent to a common horizontal plane lying above them the upper cylinder of said pair'of sliver gauging cylinders being guided at its opposite ends in stationary vertically extending guides, means for transmitting the rotation from said lower drawing cylinder to said lower adjusting device for "spinning ma chines comprising a pair of drawing cylinders apair of t lower drawing cylinderto said lower feeding cylinder are provided at both sides of'the cylinders, eccentriccams fast with the lower drawing cylinder and arranged on opposite sides of said cylinders and being staggered through 180 to each other. a
