To all whom/.it may concern.:

Be it known that I, JOHN Etrznivsrnnenn, a citizen of the United Sta-tes, residing at North Attlehorough, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in Slides for Bracelets and Chains; and I do decla-re the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure l of the drawings is a representation of an extended plan view of the bracelet. Fig. 2 is a sectional view. Fig. 3 is a plan view of fastening, showing the cover-plate raised. Fig. 4. is a front view of the bracelet. Fig. 5 is an end view of the fastening. Fig. 6 is a perspective view, showing the fastening open.

This invention has relation to :fastenings for bracelet-s and other jewelry chains; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims appended.

.In the accompanying drawings, the letter a designates a ch ain-bracelet having links b.

The base-plate c of the fastening is attached to one end of the chain by means of a pin, d, or other device common for the purpose. The base-plate is usually made in recessed or boxlike form, having the hinge-wall or abutment e, extending parallel to one edge of the chain, and opposite to said hinge-wall or abutment a wall or rise, g, provided with hook-form or recessed catch projections h.. Between the walls e and gis the seat for the end portion of the chain, the end of the chain either lying within the seat or extending beyond the same to lap over the end which is permanently attached to the base-plate.

To the base-plate is hinged the cover-.plate k, which is formed with an opening or ways for the-passage of the hook-projections It.

To`the1-conver-plate is connect-ed a springcatch, s, which is usually made with branches Z, extending parallel to each other, and designed to engage the projections hof the base to fasten the cover-plate thereto. The springcatch is provided with arms m, or push-pins, extending inopposite directions beyond the edges of the cover-plate, and serving to afford means for pressing the spring-catch to disengage it from the projections ofthe base, so' that the hinged fastening may be opened and the chain therein released.

In the base-plate is provided a'rigid tooth, catch-projection, or serrated rib, t, extending transversely with relation to the length of the chain, and adapted to engage one or more links thereof, according to the construction. In applying a bracelet having this fastening to the arm, the free end ofthe chain is carried around the wrist and then laid in the base, engaging A the teeth thereof. The cover-plate is then shut down, and, becoming secured to the base by the spring-catch, holds the chain and teeth in rigid engagement.

In some instances' the cover-plate is raised sufficiently above the base to allow the free portion of the chain to lap over the end of the chain which is attached to the base. In such constructions the teeth ofthe base are correspondingly raised.

.Sometimes it may be advisable to provide teeth on the cover-plate to engage the chain. By means of this fastening the chain can be readily fitted to the arm. j

Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

I. A-hin ged fastening for bracelets and other jewelry chains, having aseries of teeth in the base, and a cover-plate provided with a springcatch device adapted to engage the base-plate and hold the teeth thereof in engagement with the chain, substantially as specied.

2. In a jewelry-chain fastening, the combination, with the base-plate having link-engaging teeth, of a cover-plate hinged to said baseplate and adapted to be fastened thereto, whereby the chain is secured between the baseplate and the cover-plate, substantially as specified.

3. The combination, in a jewelry-chain fastening, with a base-plate having link-engaging teeth t and catch-projections 71, of a coverplate hinged to said base-plate and provided with a spring-catch and an opening or ways,
