Description

(No Model.) i
1). E. STEWART.
PIPE TONGS. No. 283,164. Patented Aug. 14, 1883.
WITNESSES INVENTOR a W 1 452x132 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL E. STEWART, GUYANDOTTE, WEST VIRGINIA.
PIPE-TONGS.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 283,164, dated August 14, 1883.
Application filed July 10, 1883. (No model.)
. To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL E. S EWAR a citizen of the United States, residing at Guyandotte, in the county of Cabell and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new andnseful Improvements in Pipe-Tongs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention has relation to improvements in pipe-tongs; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully explained, and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.
The annexed drawing, to which reference is made, fully illustrates my invention, in which the figure represents a side view'of the tongs.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawing, A designates the tongs, consisting of the arms a and b, which are pivoted by the transverse bolt 0 to one another in the usual manner. The extension (I of the arm a is curved, as shown in the drawing, and terminates at the point e, in which is made a vertical slot, f, to receive the end 9 of a curved gripping-arm, h, that is transversely perforated at the end 9 to receive the bolt or pin t,
which also passes through transverse perforations in the end of the extensiond, as shown, which arrangement forms a hinge-j oint for said, arm h, whereby the arm k may accommodate itself to different-size pipes. The face of this arm last mentioned is provided with teeth 1, while the opposite face thereto presents a plain,
smooth surface, upon which bears the end m l of the extension at, that is a part of the armb.
It will thus be observed from the above description, and by reference to' the annexed drawings, that pressure upon the arms a and b causes the point an of the arm n to bear upon the smooth or outer face of the arm h, thereby "forcing theteeth against the pipe and causing the tongs to firmly grip the same; and again, it will be seen that the arm hmay be attached to tongs now in use with but little expense, and tongs constructed as herein described do not injure the pipe, nor do they slip when a hold is taken, as the more pressure isput ,upon the arms a and b the firmer the teeth in "the curved arm take hold. At the sametime I they are durable and cheap to manufacture.
Having, thus given a description of my in-.
vention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the tongs A, the curved arm h, provided with the teeth 1011 its inner face, and having a smooth outer face, upon which bears the point m of the arm n, and
