J. M. ELLIS.
CANT HOOK. No. 601,093.A Patented Mar. 22,1898.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES M. ELLIS, -OF GALESBURG, ILLINOIS.
CANT-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 601,093, dated March 22, 1898.
' Application filed June l0, 1897. Serial No. 640,152. (No model.)
l as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in cant-hooks for lumbermen; and the object is to provide a simple, durable, and effective implement of this class, and is an improvement on that form of cant-hook for which Letters Patent No. 573,844 were granted to me on the 22d day of December, 1896.
To this end the novelty consistsin the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim. 4
In the accompanying drawings the same reference charactersindicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved cant-hook. (Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3l is a transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the clamp detached from the handle-bar.
1 represents the usual handle-bar, and 2 represents a clamp detachably secured to the handle 1 by a transverse bolt 3, which passes through the parallel ears 4 4/of said clamp and through a semicircular groove 5, formed transversely in the handle-bar.
6 represents a longitudinal plate provided with a longitudinal slot 7, which receives the rabbeted end 8 of the straight shank 9 of the hook 10, fulcrumed on the bolt 12, xed in the outer ends of the parallel Vears 4 4 of the clamp 2. By slacking up the bolt 3 the plate 6 may be adjusted longitudinally, and consequently the position of the hook regulated with reference to the handle-bar.
13 represents a spiral spring having one end fixed to the shank 9 of the hook and the other end fixed to a staple 14 on the handle.
It will be observed that the clamp 2 entirely encompasses the handle, and its integral crossbrace 15 forms an abutment or stop for the rabbeted end -8 of the shank of the hook to strike against when the end of the shank is not in engagement with the plate 6.
Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention, I do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modiications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-
lA cant-hook or dog, comprising the handle 1 provided with the transverse groove 5, the clamp 2 secured on said handle by the bolt 3 and provided with the parallel ears 4 4, the plate 6 adj ustably clamped between the clamp and the handle, and provided with the longitudinal slot 7 the hook 10, fulcrumed on the bolt 12 between said ears and provided with the straight shank 9 and rabbeted end 8 engaging said slot 7 and the spiral spring 13 connecting said hook and handle, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of twol Witnesses.
JAMES M. ELLIS.
