HANDLE POR'FILES AND OTHBR'TOOLS. i
Patented Oct. z. 1883.
N Mauren Sterns JOSIAH F. FRENCH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HANDLE FOR FILES AND OTHER T'ooLs.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 285,987, dated October 2,1883. Application tiled August 24,1883. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, Josine: F. FRENCH, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvementsin Handles for Files and other rIools, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention consists of'a handle constructed for secure attachment to the tang or stem of a ile or other tool,` substantially as described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view, mainly in section, and drawn to an enlarged scale, of my improved handle for files and other tools; Fig. 2, a view showing the tang Aof a file or other tool prepared for attachment to the handle; Fig. 3, a transverse section of Fig. l on the line l 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional view, illustrating a modification of my invention; and Fig. 5, a view showing the application of the handle to a iile or other tool which has no abrupt shoulder.
Into an orifice in the wooden portion A of the handle is driven ainetal tube, B, made, preferably, of cast-iron annealed, a portionof the tube being made octangular in the present instance, as shown in Fig. 3, to prevent it from turning in the orilice, but the tube may have a fin, and may be otherwise constructed externally to prevent it from turning. The
tube B is contracted and threaded internally at x, and is adapted to that portion of the tang I) of a iile or other tool which has parallellythreaded edges m m, as shown in Fig. 2, a feature which forms no part of niy present invention, and which I do not claim in this ap plication, as it forms the subject of an application for a patent filed by me August 27 ,1883, Serial No. 104,858. The tube B has a flange, a, which is in contact with the end of' the wooden portion of the handle, and into the latter is driven and secured a ferrule, G, having an internal circular fiange, b, between which and the outer end of tube B intervenes the flange h of the ring H, the latter projecting beyond the end ofthe ferrule.
In screwing the above-described handle to its place thc tube serves as a nut and the outer edge of' the ring H will be brought to bearon the shoulder m m of the tang, and in tightening the handle the ring will not turn, but the end of the tube willV bear and turn, against the small end of the ring, the latter thus serving as a washer when the final tightening takes place.
The object ofthe internal flange, b, of the ferrule in conjunction with the flange h of' the ring is to permanently connect the latter to the handle, and this may be done in ways other than that described. For instance, the ring H may be without a flange, as shown in Fig. 4, and a pin or pins, w, may be passed through and secured to the ferrule and project into a circular groove in the ring.
Vhatever plan may be adopted of` confn-h ing the ring H to the ferrule the connection should be loose, as shown in the drawings, so that the handle can be turned independently of the ring and so that the latter can accomniodate itself to any inequalities on the shoulders of the file and othertool.
I prefer to make a ball-and-socket bearing at the junction of the ring with the end of the.
tube, a feature, however, which forms no part of niy present invention. The handle is not restricted in its vapplication to files or other tools having abrupt shoulders. It may be fitted, for instance, to afile or other tool having a tang, as shown in Fig. 5, in which case the ring will bear against the tapering portion of' the tang. l
I claiin as my invention- A tool-handle in which a threaded tube, B, driven into the wooden portion of the handle, and a ferrule, G, secured to the same, are conibined with a ring, H, loosely connected to the ferrule, substantially as set'forth.
In testimony'whereof' I have signed my name to this specication in the presence of two sub scribing witnesses.
JOSIAH F. FRENCH.
