HALTER.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,121, dated May 1, 1860.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEWIS IVHITEHEAD, of Nunda, in the county of Livingston and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Constructing Halters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and eXactdescription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature of iny invention consists in inserting two rings into the gutter-piece of the halter, in such a manner that the throatband may be fastened to the upper one, while a long chin-piece is made to extend, doubled, through the lower one, having upon its doubled part a ring, to which the lead is attached; or a split lead may be substituted for the chili pieces ring.

To enable others, skilled in the art, to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

I construct my halter in the known form of the five ringed halter (see Fig. lst) with the exception of the neck-band, which I cut two inches longer than commonly used, and then divide into two equal parts; also, the strap` forming the Chin-piece, which I cut twentyetwo inches long, and construct as described below; into my (Fig. 2d) gutter-piece I insert two rings, (marked A, A,) one at each extremity, and alike in position; to one of these rings I att-ach the pieces which forni my neck-band, (B, E,) while, through the one at the lower end, I slip Yone end of my chin-piece, (C, 0,) pass a ring (E,) with the lead (F) attached upon it, and then return it through the ring (A,) of the gutter-piece; I then stitch the ends of the chin-piece (E, E,) to the rings of the nose-band (Fig, 1st A, A,) and the ends of the neck-straps to the rings B B Fig. 1st when the halter is completed; or,

if another method is preferred, I do away with my chin-piece (Fig. 2nd C, (3,) and stitch upon the heavy part of a common (Fig. 3d) halter-lead a piece of leather about one foot in length, leaving the loose end even with the end of the lead, (A, A,) thus forining what is called a split lead, and, passing both ends (B, E,) through the ring of the gutter-piece, (C, C,) attach them to the ing ot' the nose-band, when the halter is completed (Fig. 4).

The operation of niy invention is such, that, when the halter is upon the afnilnals head, the throat-band, by the insertion of the ring, is brought down,back of the jaw bone and following its angle so that it is impossible for it to be slipped from the head. Also, when the beast is inclined to pull, and settles back, the strain upon the lead causes the ring of the gutter-piece to travel up the chin-piece, or split lead, and thus causes the nose-band and the portion of the chin-piece or split lead, above the ring, to tighten around the aninials jowl, causing it to desistI from its eiorts for release.

lVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,

1. The construction of the gutter-piece with two rings, or their equivalent, in such manner that the neck-band may be attached to the u aper one, while the chin-piece, or split leac, passes through the ring atthe lower ends.

2. The construction of the neck-band in two parts, and its attachment to the upper ring ot' the gutter piece.
