Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB FASSNAOHT, OF NEV MILLTOVN, PENNSYLVANIA.
HARNESS.
Specieaton of Letters Patent No. 25,401, dated September 13, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB FASSNACHT, of New Milltown, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Device in the Manufacture of a Certain Portion of Harness for Horses, which consists in combining the hipstrap and breech band, (usually made of broad, double straps of leather sewed together, cut separately,) collectively called the breeching; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The improvement consists in laying off the requisite angle B. D. B., Fig. 2, for one of the two sides A, on the side of leather, and thus in one piece cut out the entire one half side of the breeching, an oval portion for the reception of the horses haunch being removed` as shown by Fig. l, representing both pieces A joined into one, with the pieces B over the seams to strengthen them. The breech rings D are also secured, by lapping the ends over and sewing down, the cross, back-straps C, are sewed on, and the article is complete, and ready for use. An ordinary crupper may of course be added. Thus instead of cutting up the leather in long, broad belts, and shorter stay or brace ieces and doubling them makin it necessary tohave long lines of stitching along both edges, much sewing (and thereby ripping also) is saved, by this simple arrangement, the breeching is cut and made at a great saving of time, and leather, is easier put on or from the horse, lasts longer, and is better adapted to the muscular motions of the animal than the ordinary stiff double, braced, breeching; and thus can be truly considered anew article of manufacture, which comes cheaper and is more desirable, in the judgment of those who have seen it tried on. Fig. 3 shows the article in place with the cross straps o, attached to the haines.
I am aware that the principle is identical with the ordinary mode of making, collectively considered; but, the article, both in cutting and combining is deemed both novel and highly useful, in its application. It may be ornamented and scored to suit the fancy also.
That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The device of combining the hip-strapl and breech band in one continuous piece A for each half, united at B. B. to form the breeching as herein set forth and described.
