Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.y
JAMES NEIL, OF YORKVILLE, NEW YORK.
STIRRUP FOR RIDING-SADDLES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 18,246, dated September 22, 1857.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES NE1L, of Yorkville, New York, have invented a nev7 and useful Improvement to Prevent the Foot from Being Held if a Rider Falls From His Horse; and I hereby declare that t-he following is a full and exact description ot the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part ot this specification.
Like letters refer to like parts.
The stirrup may be made of any approved pattern, except the upper part, Which is inodied to suit the improvement, see Figure 2., also Fig. l. A,-crosspieoe which is held by the stirrup strap. B -rivet or screw, which allows the piece A, to Work easily in the joint. C-pin Which holds the end of A, firmly until D, D, D, is drawn back by the foot being caught in the stirrup. V'hen the piece D, D, D, is drawn back by the toot, the pin C must dran7 out and liberate one end of the piece A, thus causing the stirrup to fall, along with the foot, from the strap. The piece D, D, D, is kept Constantly out and the'pin C, consequently in, by any suitable spring, which in the above Fig. l, '1S a spiral spring marked S, S, S. It is neeessary that the piece D, D, D, F, F, should Work freely at the joints E, E, and for that purpose the stirrup may be provided with any suitable projections such as those marked Gr, Gr, either outside or inside ot the pieces F, F, through which a pin may go.
What T claim as my invention and desire` to secure by Letters Patent is- The extension-piece or lever D, D, F, F. arranged and applied to the stirrup, so that w hen the rider falls, his foot, if it remain in the stirrup, shall operate the said extension piece or lever D, F, so as to tree one end o the bar A, and thus release the stirrup from the stirrup strap. Substantially in the manner above set forth.
JAMES NEIL.
