Description
E. WHITTEMORE FOLDING SAW HORSE.
,560. Patented Peb. 9, 1864.
Noy 41 Wat/www UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ENOGH VHITTEMORE, OF NORTH PARIS, MAINE.
FOLDING SAW-HORSE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 41,560, dated February 9, 1864.
Be it known that I, E'NooH VHITTEMORE, a resident of North Paris, in the county of Oxford, in the State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Folding Saw-Horse; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, in which.-
Figure l, denotes a top view; Fig. 2, a side elevation, and Fig. 3, a longitudinal section of'it, when it is unfolded or in a state to receive a log of wood to be sawed. Fig. 4 represents it with its parts folded together or as prepared for being either packed away or transported from one place to another.
In the said drawings, A and B, are two jaw frames each of which is composed of two bars, a, a, or Z2, united together by a cross bar, 0, or d, disposed at or near their lower ends. One of these frames is arranged within the other and both have a horizontal shaft, O, extending through them so as to enable either or both to be turned freely on such shaft. The two frames A, B, are placed within a brace frame, D, composed of two bars, e, e, connected at their lower ends to a cross bar, E, the shaft, C, being extended into and fastened within the upper ends of the bars, e, e. The cross bar, E, not only has a footboard or platform, F, extending from it and forward and between the bars, e, e, but it has two journals, g, g, one of which passes through each of the bars, e, e, and so as to be capable of freely turning therein, a pin, L., extending through each journal and against the outer side of the bar, serving to keep the bar, E, and the bars, e, e, in connection. The platform, F, is further connected with the bars e, e, by two links or slotted hangers, z', z', arranged as shown in the' drawings. Two screws, lc, Z, go through the slot of each of these hangers, one of the said screws being screwed into the platform and the other into the next adjacent bar, e. A spring, G, projecting from the platform, F, bears against the underside of the cross bar, (l, and serves to move the outer j aw-bars in such manner as to release their grasp on a stick of wood when placed between them and the inner jaw-bars. Those parts of the jaw-bars which project above their sha-ft are, or may be provided with teeth z', z', z', to catch into a log or stick, when placed in the crotch of the horse.
Then the saw horse is opened or has its parts arranged as shown in Figs. l and 2, a pin, m, passed through one of the bars of the brace frame, will serve as a stop to arrest that movement of the outer jaw frame, which may be produced by the action of the spring G. For the purpose of firmly confining a log between the jaws of the jaw frames, the sawyer, while he may be standing on the platform, F, should press his foot on the foot bar, (Z. In case it may be desirable to prevent the spreading apart of the brace bar frame and that jaw bar frame which may rest o-n the ground, a rope, n, attached to the platform, F, may be stretched and tied to the cross bar of such jawl bar frame.
By being made as above described, the said horse'may have its parts folded together as represented in Fig. t, in which case it will be in a state convenient for being stowed away or packed and transported.
I claimn 1. The portable folding saw horse as made of the two jaw frames (A, 13,) and the brace frame (D,) arranged and combined together in manner and so as to operate substantially as specified.
2. And I also claim, the improved folding saw horse, as made not only of the two jaw frames (A, 13,) and the brace frame (1),) but with the folding platform, (F.) the whole being substantially as specified.
3. And I also claim the portable folding saw horsev as made, not only of the two jaw frames (A, 13,) the brace frame, (1),) and the folding platform (F,) but as having a spring, (G) or its equivalent applied to the platform and so as to operate one of the jaw frames in manner as specified.
ENzOOH WHITTEMORE.
