Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH H. FISHER, OF PLACERVILLE, CALIFORNIA.
F.ASTE1\`I'I1\TGr` THE HANDLES TO PICKS AND OTHER TOOLS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 29,155, dated July 17, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. FISHER, of Placerville, in the county of Eldorado and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Fastening for Connecting Picks and other Tools to Their Handles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a sectional view showing my invention. Fig. 2., is a rear end view. Fig. 3, is a perspective view of the wedge, and Fig. 4c, a detached view of the gib and key.
Similar letters of reference in each of the several figures, indicate corresponding parts.
My invention consists in the combination with a handle which extends partly into the eye of the pick and has a socket in its rear end and two shouldered spring straps at its sides, of a portable wedge constructed with a tongue and a gib and a key seat or slot, in the manner and for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
To enable others, skilled in the art, to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A, is the pick having a` Haring eye as usual.
B, is the handle constructed so as to extend into the eye a sufficient distance to be firmly bound by the metal inclosing the same, and thus be prevented from splitting.
C, C, are spring metal straps attached respectively by bolts a, a, to the upper and lower edges of the handle. These straps are tapering in form and extend a suflicient distance beyond the rear end of the handle so as to pass entirely through the eye when the pick and handle are secured together.
A shoulder b, iS formed on each strap, So that the pick shall not slip up on the handle.
E, is a wedge to be inserted at the rear end of the eye. This wedge has a tongue c, formed on it, and through this tongue, a slot c, is cut. lhen the wedge iS driven into the eye and between the spring metal straps, from the rear of the pick, its tongue enters a socket f, cut in the rear end of the handle, and its transverse slot e, comes in line with similar slots cut through the handle. Thus driving in the wedge, forces the spring straps apart and causes them to bind as wedges against the eye in such manner as to lirmly retain the pick in the handle. Now by inserting a gib f, and key g, through the transverse slot e, in the tongue of the wedge and in the handle, the wedge and handle will be drawn firmly together and the union between the handle and pick perfectly accomplished.
My invention provides a good and substantial fastening for connecting handles to picks and other tools, so that they can be easily taken therefrom to admit of sharpening and other necessary repairs without injury to the handle; also that any number of picks or tools may be adjusted to one handle, thereby lessening the cost.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a handle which extends partly into the eye of the pick and has a socket in its rear end and two shouldered spring straps at its sides, of a portable wedge constructed with a tongue and a gib and a key seat or Slot.
