MILL-PICK.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 31,964, dated April 9, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER FAvEn, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use certain new and useful Improvements in Hill-Picks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure I is a side perspective view of my improved mill-pick; Fig. II, a cut section of the same, with the steel chisel B detached, as shown, also showing` position of wrench or key E; Fig. III, perspective (edge) view of the chisel B employed; Fig. IV, an end perspective view of the metal head or hammer A, showing the mortise or opening C; Fig. V, a view of wrench E, with its tapering shank, to be used as shown in Fig. II for the purpose of ejecting the chisel B from its socket d in the hammer A; Fig. VI, an edge view of chisel B employed.
In the drawings, like parts of the invention are indicated by similar characters of reference.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and application of certain new and useful improvements in mill-picks, as hereinafter set forth and described.
To enable those skilled in the arts to make and use my invention I will speak `of the construction and operation of the same.
A shows a metallic head or hammer suspended upon its handle F; said hammer A, having two elongated peens or sockets cz. a. into which are inserted the Shanks b. Z), of the chisels B and B, into corresponding mortises or openings C in said peens or sockets a. a. Said shanks b. Z) are shouldered down to a decreased thickness and width from the body of the chisels B and B thus forming square shoulders l, 2, which shoulders l, 2, rest against the face or faces of the peens or sockets o. a of the hammer A aforesaid. Underneath the peens or sockets a. a, and `into bosses a, a2, forming parts of the same, are inserted the set screws D. D, which bear up against the under side of the Shanks Z9. o of the chisels B and B, and hold the same firmly in position.
G. G are vertical tapering slots, which admit of the entrance of the tapering shank inserting the shanks of the chisels with their continuous square shoulders resting against the face of the peens of said hammer A, which make them much more eflicacious and durable.
`When a projection or a partial shoulder is employed, or a diamond shaped chisel is used, the hammer is soon destroyed, the wedge-shaped chisel from continuous striking expands the opening made to receive it,
destroys the shank of the hammer and is soon thrown aside. A partial projection breaks away the face of the peen of the hammer, which renders it useless. By my improved plan, the shanks of the chisels are inclosed or surrounded with a thickness of metal corresponding to the bulk of the peen or peens in which they are inserted and are kept firmly in position by the set screws D. D, which have a long bearing by the employment of the bosses marked a" a2 of said peen or peens of the hammer A, and they, the chisels, can be readily forced or thrown out by -the employment of the shank of the wrench E as herein described. These advantages make my improved pick, easy to adjust, effective in its'blow, and very durable.
Having thus fully described my invent-ion, I do not claim any of the parts separately, but*- What I do claim is The arrangement of the head A, sockets a, slots C, set screws D, chisels B. B. and handle F, when these several parts are constructed and combined in the manner and for the purpose specified.
