To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ALBERT W. VALKER, of Clemmonsville, in the county of Davidson and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tobacco- Driers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, makinga part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tobaccodrier with my improvements attached. Fig. 2 is a top View of the same. Fig. 3 is a longi tudinal section through .c w of Fig. 2.

My invention relates to devices for drying and curing tobacco in the barn or tobaccohouse; and it consists in the combination of devices hereinafter explained and claimed.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the exact manner in which I have carried it out.

In the drawings, A represents the fire-box, and B the hot-air chamber, both properly constructed of suitable masonry in the ordinary way, and provided with cold-airpassages c c c. Over the firebox is the flue D, for the admission of atmospheric air to the hot-air chamber. In practice the lire-box is constructed on the outside of the building, and the hot-air chamber extends entirely across the inside of the building. Vithin the hot-air chamber, and extending from the iire-box to the chimney on the opposite side of the building, is the pipe E, for carrying the smoke from the lire to the chimney. This pipe also materially aids in heating up the air, and is to that extent an economical construction, as it lessens the amount of fuel necessary for drying and curing the tobacco. The hot-air chamber is providedwith a metallic cover, F, divided longitudinally in the center, leaving a slight openingy between the two halves, and each side may be loosely pivoted at f, near its outside longitudinal center. By this construction the ends of each half of the cover can be moved from or toward each other, so that the ends near the rebox may be brought in contact, if required, so as to diminish the amount of ascending heat at that point, and at the same time the opening is gradually increased toward the opposite end of the chamber, where the heat becomes gradually less intense, thus securing a means for regularly adj usting the heat entirely across the houses.

Having thus explained my invention, what I claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

. 1. In a drying and curing apparatus, the hot-air chamber B, provided with the metallic cover F, divided longitudinally and having each half ofthe cover adjustable, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. In a drying andvcuring apparatus, the.

hot-air chamber B, provided with a longitudinally-divided cover, in combination with the fire-box A, flue D, and pipe E, all constructed to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
