UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SIDNEY PARKER AND JAMES D. BENNETT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGN- ORS, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO GEORGE H. WATSON, OF AOKLEY, IOWA, ABNER W. MOERILL AND FRED S. MORRILL, OF WA- TERLOO, IOWA, AND SIDNEY PARKER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SMOKE-CONSUMING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,606, dated May 9, 1882.
Application filed January 9, 1882. (No model.)
,To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SIDNEY PARKER and JAMES D. BENNETT, both of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of lilinois, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for .Cousuming Smoke in Furnaces; and we hereby declare the following tobe a full. clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable'others skilled in the art to which our invention relates to make and use the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, forming a part hereof, and in which Figure 1 represents a side view of a steamboiler and furnace with our apparatus attached.
I Fig. 2 represents a trout view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a front view of the. apparatus 1) with its cover removed. Fig. 4 represents a side view of the apparatus D in section, on A the line .10 a", with its cover and inlet and exhaust pipesf and h. Fig. 5 represents an end sectional. view taken on the line 3 3 Like letters of reference indicate like parts.
The object of our invention is to produce a smoke-consuming apparatus, situated within the furnace of a boiler above the fire, by means of a jet of steam operating upon the flame and exhaust of the apparatus; h, the cover of the apparatus D, and i a channel around the top of the side walls of the heater D, and j a corresponding head on its cover h.
It represents the wire screens covering the openings 12, made at alternate ends through the partition-walls Z. i
The exhaust-pipe g has a slot, m, extending along the entire length of the outerside of the T-shaped exhaust.
The top It is firmly bolted to the apparatus D, and the channel i is packed with asbestus or other heat-resisting substance, so as to make a steam-tight joint.
The apparatus D is placed on the inside of the furnace-wall, and preferably a little from it, so that heat may pass up between it and the furnace-wall, so as to thoroughly heat it, and thus superheat the passing steam, and thereby give it increased force and dryness'by the time it comes in contact with the smoke and gases. The screens 7c retard the steam as it passes from one chamber a into another, and thereby subject it to greater heat befor it finally emerges from the slot at.
The apparatus 1) is made of cast-iron, to which the cover It is strongly bolted, as shown, andits place in the furnace may be more or less to the front or rear along theside walls; or a series of them may be fastcned to both sides and front of the furnace-walls. A bridgewall,'c, is placed across the rear of the furnace for the purpose of retarding the smoke, which would otherwise be urged into the chim ney too rapidly and partly deft-at the object sought.
What we claim as new is The apparatus D, formed of one solid piece of cast-iron, and provided with partition-walls l, dividing it into chambers 12, having open-75 ings p at alternate ends of said chambers,-provided with screens, channel '5, and iuletf, in combination with cover h, provided with bead j, and T-shaped exhaust provided with slot'm,
substantially as specified.
