STEAM-BOILER FURNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,480, dated May 17, 1881,
Application filed January 10 1881.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it, known that I, JOSEPH ENRIG-HT, of San J os, Santa Clara county, State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boiler Furnaces, and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which they most nearly appertain to make and use my said invention without further invention or experiment.
My improvements consist in combining a water-chamber or water-bridge walltwith water-grates within the furnace of a steam-boiler used for burning straw as fuel, and the peculiar manner of arrangingthe water-pipes which serve to connect the water-bridge wall with the boiler; also, in connecting a small steam-pipe with the dome of the boiler and placing it over the furnace-door, through which I convey a small jet of steam from the steam-boiler to the furnace, as will be hereinafter more fully shown and described.
In order to explain my improvements so that others will understandtheir nature and application, I refer to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure lis alongitudinal section of my boiler, showing the steam-pipe J. Fig. 2 is a frontend View, showing the connecting-pipes G C and the water-grates B B and the furnace-front E. Fig. 3 shows my improvements, consisting of water-bridge wall D, water-grates B B, connecting-pipes C G, and furnace-front E, removed from the steam-boiler furnace in a body. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the rear or furnace end of the boiler.
My improvements are especially applicable to steam-boiler furnaces of portable engines, known as thrashing engines, and using straw as fuel. When straw (which is a quickburning fuel) is used in a steam-boiler furnace to generate steam, the feeding is continuous. Consequently a very high degree of heat is maintained, which ordinary bridge-walls and grates fail to stand for anylength of time, which must be remedied in order to utilize straw as a fuel economically.
By my invention I .am enabled to make a bridge-wall and grates which will withstand the severest test of heat. It is made hollow,

The bridge-wall and furnacefront are connected together by the gratings, and altogether form a removable grate or firepot, which fits snugly into its place in the steam-boiler furnace, and from which it may be removed at pleasure by disconnecting the pipes 0 from the pipes which connect their outer ends with the boiler.

A narrow throat is thus provided above it, for the smoke and heat to pass from the grate to the ash-chamber A in its rear, and an opening below it, through which the ashes may be drawn from the said chamber A The water-back stands intermediately between the fire-front E and the ends of the small flues A which pass; through the water in the rear end of the boiler. Whenconstructed and arranged as described it is specially adapted to that class of portable steamboilers in which straw is employed as fuel.
I am also enabled by my peculiar construction of connecting-pipes to prevent the destruction of the joints by fire, they being connected on the outside with the steam-boiler. I am also enabled to remove with dispatch the water-bridge wall and grate in a body from the furnace, for the purpose of cleaning and repairing. i
In using straw as a fuel in portable steam thrashing-engines and boilers in the harvestfield to drive thrashing-machines, it is necessary to have a strong blast or draft in order to perfect combustion, and this is particularly essential when the straw used for fuel is wet or damp.
Heretofore the draft has been supplied by conveying the exhaust-steam from the engine through a pipe to the smoke-stack of the steamboiler, and by closing or cramping the outlet, which causes a back-pressure on the engine, thereby incurring a great loss of power.
I connect a small steam-pipe with the dome of the boiler and insert it above the door of the straw-burning steam-boiler furnace, through which I convey a small jet of steam from the boiler to the furnace, thereby causing astrong draft or blast economically and sufficient to cause complete combustion of the straw, which causes the boiler to generate steam freely and sufficient to drive a thrashing-machine. in the harvest-field to its fullest capacity Without crampingthe exhaust-pipe of the steam engine, thereby saving both fuel and power.
