UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. BURROWS, on soMEEv1LLE, ASSIGNORTO HIMSELF Ann ELLERY E; MERRIAM, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
SMOKE AND SPARK CONSUMER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 248,019, dated October 11, 1881.
A Application filed January 26, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE H. BUnRoWs,
of Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new anduseful Improvement in Smoke and Spark Consumers, of which the following is a Full, clear, andexact description.
The invention consists in placing a wire plug in and causing it to project from the flue of a boiler, furnace, or heater into the combustionchamber for the purpose of consuming the smoke and other light products of combustion, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings my invention is shown as applied in connection with boilerflues.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of one boiler-tube, and Fig. 2is a transverse section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the tube-sheet of a boiler; B, the tube secured therein, and G a space over the fire.
D is the smoke-consumer, consisting of a plug made up of wire in spiral coils and inserted in the end of tube B. The plug D is ofa diameter to fit tightly in the tube, aud is made hollow with an enlarged head or end, d, of conical f0rm,that projects from the end of the tube. This coiled-wire plug allows the products of combustion to pass freely, and receivin g heat therefrom becomes heated sufficiently to burn up the unconsumedcarbon. I prefer to use copper wire, for the reason that it is more durable under the high heat to which the metal is subjected. The device in this formis very efficient and acts without checking the draft. The enlarged head increases the surface of metal to be heated, and gives free exit at all sides.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent' In combination with the flue of a boiler, furnace, 'or heater, a mass of wire arranged in and to project from a flue into the combustionchamber, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
GEORGE E. BURROWS.
