UNITED STATES JACKSON 0. MILLNER, or DANVILLE, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-DRIERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,737, dated March 17, 1874 application filed May 19, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACKSON 0. MILLNER, of Danville, in the county of Pittsylvania and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tobacco-Curing Furnaces, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawing forming a part of the same, and in which- Figure 1 represents a top or plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a front View of the same Fig. 3, avertical section thereof, taken through one of the furnaces and one of the heaters; and Fig. 4, a corresponding view, taken through one of the heaters and the chimney or outlet for smoke.
Like letters in the several figures are designated by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to an improvement in tobacco-curing furnaces; and it consists of such a furnace, composed of a series of heaters, having the furnaces and chimney located at one and the same end thereof, while the opposite ends of the same are united by a transverse flue or heater, the said furnaces being of different sizes or capacities, and the heaters supplied with cut-offs, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
In the drawing, A A A refer to a series of heaters, the outer ones, A, of which communicate with the large furnaces B B, and two of the inner ones, A A with the small furnaces B B, while the remaining or middle one, A communicates with the chimney 0, located, as will be observed, at the same end of the curer as that at which the furnaces B B are placed. A transverse flue or heater, A unites all the heaters A A A and conducts heat and smoke from the two former to the latter, A communicating with the chimney 0. Through this arrangement of the heaters the above-named resultof disposing the chimney at the same end of the furnace or curer as that at which the furnaces are locatedis obtained, by which advantage is taken of the wind, no matter in which direction it may be blowing, to prevent its driving smoke, 850., out of the furnace-doors, or carrying or drawing the particles of combustion out of the chimney, as is experienced where the chimney is located at the rear, or that end of the curer opposite that at which the furnaces are situated. Out-offs or gates to a are supplied to the heaters A A, to regulate the intensity of the heat of the same.
In the first stage of curing the tobacco it is subjected to the greater heat of the large furnaces B B, and then subjected to the less heat of the small furnaces B B, when it will be properly and thoroughly cured.
Pans D D are adjusted upon the heaters, through metallic straps d d or other suitable means. These pans, which are to be partially filled with water, and receive the tobacco to be cured, rest upon sheet-iron plates supplied to and which form the top surfaces of the heaters. The effect of the heat upon the pans is thus augmented.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, is
In a tobacco-curer, the arrangement of the heaters A A A A cut-offs or gates to a, furnaces B B, and chimney O, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 13th day of May, 1873, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JACKSON 0. MILLNER.
