JOHN \VINTERMIIIE CASSIDY, OF PETAL'UMA, CALIFORNIA.
FURNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,152, dated December 11, 1888.
Application filed May 25, 1888- Serial No. 275,112, (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, .ToHN WINTERMUTE CASSIDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Petaluma, in the county of Sonoma and State of ttllfol'lllti, have invented a new and useful Improvennmt in Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relatcsto an inun'ovement in furnaces; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of a furnace embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same, a portion of one of the walls being broken awa to disclose the interior arrangement.
A represents the furnace or setting, which is built of brick or masonry, and is rectangular in shape, as shown. At a suitable distance from the lower side of the furnace, and extending longitudinally throughout the entire length of the same, is an arch, B, which forms the crown or roof of the fire-box G. Under the said tire-box is arranged. the pit I), and at the front end of the tire-box is the door E.
F represents the steam-boiler, which is arranged innnediately above the arch, and has one end projecting through the front wall of the furnace. From the rear end of the arch extends a pair of pipes, G, which are arranged horizontally to pass through the front wall of the furnace, and COlllllllllllCitilQ with the lower end of an escape flue or pipe, II. Said pipes (l are arranged on opposite sides of the furnace, and the said pipe 11 has a curved hood or chan'lber, I, at its lower end, which is arranged astride of the projecting front end of the boiler, and with which the pipes G comnumicate.
K represents the perforated pipe which extends through the tire-box. To the outer end of the said pipe is attached a pipe, Ii, which is connected to a suitable oil-reservoir, (not shown,) and from the opposite side of said, pipe K and in line with the pipe L extends a steam-pipe, \I, which communicates with the boiler, and has a safety-valve, N, and a stop-cock, O. The pipe L is also provided with the stop-cock P.
The operation of myinvention is as follows: Oil is fed to the pipe K from the reservoir, and steam is admitted to said pipe from the boiler through the pipe M, so as to discharge the oil into the fire-box in the form of spray, thus reinlering the oil. actively combustible. The heat radiated from the arch is sufficient to generate steam in the boiler and heat the upper portion of the furnace, so as to adapt the same for d r ving fruit and other purposes. The products of combustion escape from under the arch through the pipes G and H.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The furnace having the crowned arch I at a suitable distance from its lower side, the boiler arranged above the furnace, incased within the walls thereof, and having its front end extending through the front wall of the furnace, the escape-pipes G, arranged on opposite sides of the boiler above the crown-arch and connnunicating with the fire-box at their inner ends, the vertical pipe II on the front side of the furnace, and the curved hood or chamber I at the lower end of said pipe and astride the front end of the boiler and communicating with the pipe G, substantially as described.
2. The furnace having the tire-box provided with the crowned arch B, and the escape-pipes G, ext-endin forward from the rear end of said arch, and the pipe H, with which said pipes G communicate, substantially as described.
3. The furnacehaving the crowned arch B at a suitable distance from its lower side, the boiler arranged above the furnace and iiicased within the walls thereof, the escapepipes G, arranged on opposite sides of the boiler above the crown-arch and com1nunieating with the tire-box at their inner ends, and the pipe II, connnunicatin g with the outer ends of the pipes G, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto atfixed my signature in.
presence of two witnesses.
JOHN IVINTERMUTE CASSIDY.
