STEAM-BOILER FU RNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 436,138, dated September 9, 1890.

Beit known that I, ALLEN R. J ONES, OE Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam- Boiler Furnaces; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact descripiion thereof.
My invention relates to steam-boiler furnaces; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, to be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l represents a front elevationof a steam-boiler furnace provided with my improvements, certain of the parts being broken away and in section for the purpose of better illustration; Fig. 2, a view representing certain parts of the furnace and my improvements in side elevation and section; Fig. 3, a detail sectional view of a steam and water mixing mechanism that constitutes part of my invention; Fig. 4, a like view of a portion of a smoke-conducting system that also forms part of myinvention; Fig. 5, a similar view of another portion of the smokeconducting system; and Fig. 6, a detail plan View of the steam and water and smoke mixing chamber shown in section, Fig. 2.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents the ash-pit, B the {ire-box, and C the smoke-box, of an ordinary steam-boiler furnace.
Extended through the smoke-box C is a horizontal tube D, having its under side provided with a series of openings b, and to each and of this horizontal tube I couple the upper end of a vertical tube E, the lower end of the latter being connected by a lateral branch F with a chamber G, that extends through the furnace-wall H and has its discharge c on an angle toward the center of the tire-box, as best illustrated in Fig. 6. Fitted to the outer ends of the chambers G are caps I, and these caps are provided with observation-openings normally closed by detachable plugs d, as is best illustrated in Fig. 2.
A pipe J, leading from a source of steamsupply, is coupled to distributer-pipes K L, and the amount of steam admitted to the latter pipes is controlled by means of valves e f. (Illustrated inFigl.) Ahorizontal branch M, leading from the steam-distributer pipe B, is provided with a series of jet-spouts g,
that extend up through the openingsb in the horizontal tube D, said spouts being of such construction and arrangement that there are an equal number of jets discharged on opposite sides of the center of said tube. By means of the steam-jets discharged into the horizontal tube D a draft is created that draws smoke and other products of combustion from the smoke-box C through the Openings b in said tube, and these products of combustion being then carried along by the draft to the vertical flues E they are driven downward into the chambers G by jets of steam discharged into the upper ends of the latter tubes from branches N of the steam-distributer pipe K.
In order to deflect the ascending smoke and other products of combustion toward the horizontal iiue D and prevent back-draft in the smoke-pipe O, I employ a damper P, arranged just above said tube and preferably controlled by a counterweighted lever Q, having a pull-rod, cord, or chain R connected thereto, this construction and arrangement of parts being best illustrated in Fig. 2.
-A branch S, leading from the steam-distributer pipe L, is provided with spouts T that extend into the chambers G, and branches U of a pipe V, connected to a source of watersupply, are inclosed within said spouts. The mingled water and steam forms avery moist vapor, that is discharged in small jets from the spouts T and mixed with the products of combustion in the chambers G to form a highly-inflammable substance that is drawn into the fire-box B and ignited.
A branch W leads from the distributerpipe L into the ash-pit A of the furnace, and said branch being provided with a series of perforations, as shown in Fig. 1, the escaping steam actsto blow the fire and also to heat and moisten any outside air admitted to said ash-pit.
By the construction and arrangement of parts above described it will be seen that no cold air comes into contact with the fire, and the smoke and other products of combustion that usually escape into the atmosphere are returned to the firebox in the form of in- IOC flammable vapor, whereby I effect a great saving in the matter of fuel.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A steam-boiler furnace having a conduit communicating with the smoke-box and terminated at its lower ends in chambers that discharge into the fire-box, suitable means for injecting steam into the conduit, and steam and water mixing devices arranged to discharge into said chambers, substantially as set fort-h.
2. A steam-boiler furnace having a conduit communicating with the smoke-box and terminated at its lower ends in chambers that discharge into the fire-box, a damper arranged to deflect the products of combustion toward the conduit, suitable means for injecting steam into said conduit, and steam and Water mixing devices arranged to discharge into said chambers, substantially as set forth.
3. A steam-boiler furnace having a conduit communicating with the smoke-box and terminated at its lower ends in chambers that discharge into the fire-box, suitable means for injecting steam into the ash-pit and conduit, and steam and water mixing devices arranged to discharge into said chambers, substantially as set forth.
4. A steam-boiler furnace having a tube extended horizontally through the smoke-box and provided on its under side With a series of openings, vert-ical tubes coupled t0 the horizontal one, chambers leading into the fire-box and connected to the vertical tubes, a steam-distributing system having a branch provided with spouts extended through the openings in said horizontal tube and arranged to discharge an equal number of steam-jets in opposite directions from the center of the latter tube, other branches of the steam-distributing system arranged to discharge into the upper ends of the vertical fines, spouts connected to said steam-distributing system and arranged to discharge into said chambers, and a Water-distributing system having branches that discharge into the latter spouts, substantially as set forth.
