IMPROVEMENT* IN STEAM-BOILER FURNACES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,951, dated March 24, 1874 application filed August 4, 1873.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAu H. PHELoN, of the city of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisana, have invented an Improvement in Steam-Boiler Furnaces, of which the following is a speciiication:
This invention has for its objects the economizing of fuel or more perfect combustion of the smoke and escaping gases in steam-boiler furnaces, and improvement of the draft therein. The invention consists in a certain combination of gas combustion chambers and perforated longitudinal tubes with perforatedbent extension cross-pipes and branches, for the introduction of air, or steam, or both combined, to eifect a more perfect combustion of the gases.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section on the line o v of a double-return-iiue two-cylinder boiler with my invention applied to it. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section thereof on the irregular line fw 10; and Fig. 3, a horizontal section on the line :1; a'. Fig. 4 is a rear end view of the boiler, Fig. 5 a longitudinal vert-ical section on the line y y with a combustion-chamber applied, Fig. 6 a horizontal section in the line z z, and Fig. 7 a view in detail, on a larger scale, of one of the jet devices.

A A are two steam-generatin g chambers or cylinders of boiler connecting above by a steam-drum, B. C is the lire-chamber, here shown on the outside, but which might be on the inside of the boiler. The draft is along a bottom outside flue; D, to the rear of the boiler, from whence it returns through interior flues E El to the smoke-stack F. G is a combustion-chamber for the gases, the same either being used or not, as desired. When not used certain perforated tubes lying therein are removed and the chamber covered by a plate, H, Fig. l. Arranged within the fines D and E, along their bottoms, are perforated tubes I I, certain of whichthat is, those in the outer nue-are connected by perforated cross-pipes J and said longitudinal tubes and the crosspipes provided with perforated upright branches K, arranged between the boiler and the outside walls and between the cylinders of the boiler. These tubes, as a-lso all others similarly applied, should be made of very reL fractory material, to prevent destruction by the heat to which they are exposed, and, after bea ing made and perforated, should b e placed in a furnace and annealed, and be lightly fused on the outside. The longitudinal tubes I are perforated on their tops and sides, the perforations b being at an angle of forty-five degrees, or thereabout, in relation with the course of the draft and upper sides of the flues. The cross-pipes J and uprights K are also suitably perforated to accord with the draft, and distribute the steam or air emitted through their perforations in common with those of the tubes I. The perforations should be smallest as their distance from the furnaceincreases, and largest in the cross-pipes and toward the front of the furnace. The longitudinal pipes `may also be perforated at their ends, if desired.
L is a steam-distributing pipe, arranged iu rear of the boiler and connected with the steam-drum B by'a pipe cl, subject to the control of a regulating-valve, e. This distributing-pipe L has attached nozzles f, arranged to enter or face the open rear ends of the tubes I or funnels g fitted therein. These funnels may be increased in size to accommodate several steam-nozzles or jet attachments, where the perforated tubes are large. Said funnels will be mainly used when steam-jets, drawing in airalong with them, are employed to effect combustion of the gases. When a forced current of air also is used, the funnels may be omitted. M represents an air-blast distributing-pipe, which is connected, subject to the control of a regulating-valve, li, with the rear ends of the tubes I. In this way both steam and air, or either, in forced currents or blasts, may be admitted in any desired proportions among the escaping gases topromote combustion of the latter and improve the draft.
When the special combustionachamber G for the gases is used, then the plate H being removed there is substituted, for the forward straight sections or portions of the tubes l in the lower flue, a bent or angular perforated extension, N, of the tubes I, with perforated cross-pipes Z, and perforated angular branches m, all arranged Within the combustion-chamber G, to effect a more perfect combustion of the gases.
What is herein claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-= The gas-combustion chamber G, in combi-'- nation with the perforated longitudinal tubes I, and the bent or angular perforated extension N, having cross-pipes b and branches fm, essentiallT as herein set forth.
