AIR AND STEAM FEEDING DEVICE FOR FURNACES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,191, dated February 4, 1896.

To on whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. MENGEL, Sr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Bay City, in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air and Steam Feeding Devices for Furnaces, of which thefollowing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention consists in the construction of an air and steam feeding device for furnaces, and particularly in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts, all as more fully hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional perspective of a furnace having my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional perspective of a part of one of the side walls. Fig. 3 is ahorizontal section through the furnace as shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. at is a vertical section through a furnace Showing a slightlymodified form.

The inner faces of the side walls above the grates and the lining of the inclined face Gr of the bridge-wall I make of bricks H, having on opposite sides the longitudinal grooves I J. These bricks are so laid that the grooves of adjoining bricks will together make longitudinal passages which connect with the interior of the furnace by the slots K, formed by leaving out a portion of the cement between the bricks or otherwise. These grooves on opposite sides of the brick are in different vertical planes, so as not to unduly weaken the bricks. These passages may be made by building fire-clay walls with paper tubes therein. The paper-tubes burning out will leave passages of the desired size, or where it can be done, metal pipes or castings may be employed to conduct the air and steam.
. Connecting into the passages formed in the bricks of the bridge-wall are the supply-passages J, which preferably lead to the back wall and through the brickwork in front thereof, so that their contents may become highly heated before reaching the deliveryjets into the furnace. These supply-passages may and preferably do form continuations of the side passages. These side passages are open at their outer ends and provided with a funnel-shaped mouth L, opposite which are the steam jets M, to which steam is supplied from the boiler by the valve-controlled pipe N, forming an air-injector.
Steam being discharged through the jets into the funnels L will draw in air with it, and the commingled air and steam will be distributed through the passages described, being heated during transit and finally discharged through the slots K into the furnace to aid in producing smokeless combustion.
In Fig. 4 I have shown the bricks with verticalpassages arranged in an ordinary furnace without aboiler. In this construction I supply water from any suitable source which, in passing slowly through the heated passages in the brickwork, Will be formed into steam and discharge into the furnace. In this construction I place a check-valve O in the sup ply-pipe to prevent the back-pressure of the steam blowing the water back and to control the supply of water. The back-pressure due to generation of steam in the passages shuts the valve which willbe opened when the pressure is reduced to let in another supplyof water.
WVhat I claim as my invention is- The combination with a furnace having in its side walls steam and air passages and slots opening into the combustion-chamber from said passages and having a bridge-wall also provided with a similar passage and slots and further provided with a supply-passage passing to the rear of the furnace and joining said side-wall passages, of a steam and air supply for said passages, substantially as described,
