Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed September 22,1905. Serial No. 279.584.
T0v LtZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RocH BRIEN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Notre Dame de Grace, county of Hochelaga, in the Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Consumers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to smoke-consumers. The object of my invention is to provide means for obtaining perfect combustion of fuel beneath the boiler by imparting a rotary motion to the smoke and unconsumed gases over the grate-bars and also by admitting atmospheric air and steam to the combustionchamber; and my invention consists of the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as herein illustrated, described, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, I have illustrated one form of embodiment of my invention, in
which drawings similar reference characters designate corresponding parts, and in which- Figure 1 is a horizontal section on line 1 1 of Fig. 4. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a portion of a front of a boiler and its setting. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section on line 3 3 of Fig. 4, and Fig. 4is a longitudinal vertical section.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a foundation of any suitable construction, having an ash-pit 2 and a combustion-chamber 3, over the latter of which is disposed an ordinary form of boiler 4,having tubes 5. Ordinary grate-bars 6 are suitably mounted on the foundation, and the usual hinged fueldoors 7 are provided in front of the combustion-chamber, and the usual ash-removing doors 8 are provided in front of the ash-pit. The front plate 9 is arranged at a distance from the front wall of the foundation 1, so that a passage 10 is left between the front plate and the front wall of the foundation. Disposed in the passage 10 is a pivoted trap 11, through which the consumed gases may force their way. Disposed at one side of the foundation is a pipe 12, connecting with a suitable source of supply of steam and from which leads a supply-pipe 13, having a valve 14, adapted to regulate the supply of steam. Connecting with the supply-pipe 13 is a branch pipe 15, the left-hand end of which connects with a longitudinally-disposed pipe 16, provided with nozzles 17. The pipe 16 is disposed} in a passage-way 18, formed in the side walls of the foundation 1 and-having the ducts 18 communicating with the combustion-chamber adjacent the line ofthe gratebars. The front end of the passage 18 communicates with atmosphere. The righthand end of the branch pipe 15 is connected to a pipe 19, similar to the pipe 16 and having similar nozzles 17, and is disposed in a similar passage 1S ,provided with ducts 18, the only difference being that the passage 18 occupies a different horizontal plane.
Fuel being ignited in the combustionchamber by means of the valve 14, steam is admitted to the pipes 16 and 19 and enters the combustion-chamber along the lines shown by the arrows in Fig. 3, whereby a rotary motion is imparted to the smoke and unconsumed gases above the grate-bars, thereby facilitating combustion of such smoke and gases. The heated gases follow the direction of least resistance, which is through the boilertubes 5, and thence into the passage 10 between the front wall of the foundation 1 and the front plate 11. Disposed in the passage 10 below the trap 11 and adjacent the upper portion of the boiler 4 are pipes 20 20 adapted to receive the heated gases as they emerge from the front ends of the boiler-tubes. Connecting the pipe 20 with the supply-pipe 15 is a pipe 21, so that a portion of the heated gases are returned to the combustion-chamber through the pipes 16 and 19. Disposed in the chamber 10 below the pipes 20 20 are pipes 22 22 which are adapted to receive a portion of the unconsumed gases emerging from the front ends of the tubes 5, a pipe 21 connecting the pipe 19 and supply-pipe 15. Connected to the pipes 22 22 is a pipe 23, which is connected with the pipes 24, extending beneath the grate-bars 6. These pipes 24 have their inner ends terminating at different points beneath the grate-bars, so that the unconsumed gases conveyed by the pipes 22 22 are conducted to different points beneath the grate-bars, and thence upward through the burning fuel. Connected to the pipe 12 is a supply-pipe 25, having a suitable valve 26. This pipe connects with the pipe 23, so that steam may also be admitted and intermixed with the heated gases and conducted to the combustion-chamber by means of the pipes 24.
The steam admitted through the pipes 16 communicating with the atmosphere and interior of the foundation, pipes disposed in said foundation, a plate disposed in front of the boiler adapted to leave a passage between the plate and the foundation, a trap disposed in the passage, means for conducting steam and heated gases to the interior of the foundation at a plane lower than either of said horizontal passages, and means for conducting the heated pro ducts of combustion to said horizontal passages.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
ROOH BRIEN.
and 19 produces a partial vacuum in the passages 18, so that a quantity of atmospheric air is drawn into the combustion-chamber, as 1 indicated by the arrows in Fig. 1.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat-' ent, is r In a device of the character described, the combination comprising a foundation provided with a horizontal passage on each side provided with ducts communicating with the Witnesses:
JOHN F. DEUFFERWIEL, J. J. B. CHARBONNEAU.
