Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 22, 1913. Serial No. 762,817.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs E. LAPPAGE, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Birmingham, in the county of J eflerson and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Consumers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to boiler furnaces and particularly to means for augmenting the consumption of the gases contained in the products of combustion thus producing what is commonly called a smoke consumer.
An object of this invention is to provide novel means for delivering superheated steam interior-1y of the furnace at a point where it will prove effective in rarefying the products of combustion, so that the gases therein will be burned prior to their exit from the said furnace, a further object of the invention being to utilize the superheated steam as the impelling force of an injector by which air is carried into the furnace.
A further object of this invention is to provide a novel attachment for a furnace which may be embedded in the wall thereof in position to be heated by the bed of coals or the fire in the fire box, the said attachment also constituting one wall of a conduit for the admission of air so that the air passing into the furnace is heated in its travel and is made to commingle with the superheated steam at a point where the combined steam and air can be effectually employed for rarefying the products of combustion to produce the results hereinbefore stated.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a nozzle for the delivery of the superheated steam, the said nozzle having a coupling exteriorly of the furnace for the purpose of permit-ting a ready removal or substitution of the nozzle if, for any reason, the one in use becomes impaired or a change of its capacity becomes important.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 illustrates a longitudinal sectional view of a furnace embodying the in vention; Fig. 2 illustrates a horizontal sectional view of a fragment of a furnace on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 illustrates a transverse sectional view of a furnace on a line corresponding with the line 33 of Fig. 1.
In these drawings 4 denotes the bridge of a furnace, 5 the grate bars, 6 the fire boX, 7 a hollow plate inserted in a recess 8 formed in one wall of the said furnace, the said plate 7 having a conduit 9 therethrough extending backward and forward, the ends of the conduit being connected so as to form a tortuous passage through the said plate. One end of the conduit has a coupling 10 provided with a valve 11, the said valve 11 having a pipe 12 connecting it to the steam dome 13 of the boiler 14. The opposite end of the conduit has a short pipe 15 coupled to it which pipe extends exteriorly of the wall of the furnace through the recess 8 and said short pipe is provided with couplings 16 by which a nozzle 17, which leads into the recess 8 of the wall of the furnace is connected. The recess 8 forms a passage for the admission of air to the interior of the furnace and, as shown in Fig. 1, the nozzle is so positioned with relation to the passage at its junction with the interior of the furnace that the said nozzle discharges transversely of the furnace so that air drawn in by the furnace draft and by the injecting influence of the escaping superheated steam aids in rarefying the gases contained in the products of combustion so that they may be consumed.
In operation, the fire bed or the heat therefrom serves to maintain the temperature of the plates 7 much higher than the temperature of the steam escaping from the dome through the pipe 12 and the conduit within the plate and therefore the said steam as it passes through the conduit of the plate is superheated and the-high pressure resulting from its being superheated when it escapes from the nozzle acts as an injector for drawing air through the air passage so that the air and steam commingle and are projected Patented Aug. 5,1913.v
transversely of the furnace directly over the bridge wall where the same can, to better advantage, be commingled With the products of combustion.
As has been stated, the inrushing air is heated by the plate and, being further heated by the superheated steam, is delivered to the furnace at such a high temperature that it will not interfere with or in any way affect the temperature of the products of con'ibustion to the detriment of the operation of the apparatus.
I claim 1. In a boiler furnace, a furnace having a fire bed, the side wall of said furnace being provided with a recess, a plate seated in the recess approximately flush with the inner wall of the furnace and being spaced apart from the side wall of the recess whereby an air passage is produced for the entrance of air to the said furnace, a conduit in the said plate for the passage of steam therethrough, means for coupling the conduit to the interior of a boiler whereby steam therefrom may be delivered to the conduit, a nozzle extending through the wall of the furnace into the air passage, a pipe extending from the conduit to the exterior of the furnace,
and means for connecting the outer end of said pipe to the nozzle.
2. In a boiler furnace, a bridge, a side wall having a recess, a plate seated in the recess and forming a portion of the side wall, the said plate being spaced apart from the wall of the recess whereby an air passage is formed, the said plate terminating in alinement with the bridge of the furnace, and short of the inner end of the recess whereby a transversely disposed channel is produced merging with the air passage, a conduit in the plate, means for connecting the conduit to a source of steam supply, a nozzle extending transversely of the side wall of the furnace and communicating With the laterally disposed portion of the air passage at the end of the plate, a pipe extending from the conduit to a point outside of the furnace, and couplings for connecting the said pipe to the said nozzle.
