liars ATES SAMUEL NOOK, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
SMOKE-CONSUMER FOR BOILER OR OTHER FURNACES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 663,129, dated December 4:, 1900.
Application filed April 30. 1900.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL NOCK, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Consumers for Boiler or other Furnaces; and I do hereby declare the following to be a-full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved smokeconsnmer for boiler and other furnaces; and it consists in the certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side sectional elevation of a boiler-furnace setting, showing my improved smoke-consumer arranged in connection therewith, the same being constructed and fitted in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same, showing a portion of the boiler removed. Fig. 3 is a rear end sectional elevation of the boiler-setting. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detailed elevation of a portion of the steam-jets arranged at the rear of the boiler. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detailed side elevation of one of the valves for regulating and controlling the admission of steam and air into the fire-chamber.
To construct a smoke-consumer in accordance with my invention and adapt the same for use in boiler and other like furnaces, the said furnace and setting consisting of the boiler or steamgenerator 1, arranged in a suitable setting 2, in which is formed a firechamber 4, having grate-bars 6, a bridge-wall 3, fire-doors 5, and other parts well known in the art, I form from suitable tubing a series of steam-jets 11, arranged in two rows, and locate the same at the rear of the boiler l in a position that will direct the current of steam across the rear end of the smoke-fines and at right angles therewith. Formed in connection with this series of steam-jets 11 is a perforated nozzle 10, used to direct a current of steam toward a smoke-flue located at the opposite side of the setting and in a direct line with the said nozzle 10. This smokeflue 15 is formed with a large entrance 13 and Serial No. 15,023. (No model.)
reduced exit 14, entering the fire-chamber 4 at a point at or about the level of the bridgewall 3. Connecting these steam-jets 11 and nozzle 10 is a supply-pipe 9, fitted with a regulating-valve 9 and in communication with the steam-dome 7 of the boiler 1 by means of a branch pipe 8,which arrangement when the valve 9 is opened will supply steam from the boiler to the said jets and nozzle.
At the front of the boiler 1 is placed asteampipe 16, connected to the branch 8, leading from the dome 7, and the said pipe fitted with a regulating-valve 17. This pipe 16 is arranged in a horizontal position across the front of the setting at a point above the firedoors 5 and is fitted with a series of combined inlet-valves and air-mixers, (see Fig. 5,) each of which consists of a shell 18, provided with an internal valve 21 and steam-jet 23 to regulate the flow of steam and with openings 22 for the admission ofair, and each of the valves connected to a nozzle 19, having a perforated end 20 and arranged to project into the firechamber 4 about the level of the top of the bridge-wall 3.
In operation the smoke passing over the bridge-wall 3 on its way to the rear end of the smoke-fines is met with a counter-current of steam from the nozzle 10 and jets 11, which will abstract the smoke particles and force the same into the mouth of the smoke-flue 15 and create a draft to convey the said smoke particles back to the fire-chamber 4, where they are consumed and the combustion of the fuel in the said chamber aided by the admixture of steam and air from the nozzles 19.
Various slight modifications and changes may be made in the details of construction and the arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described smoke-consumer for boiler and other like furnaces, consisting of the series of steam-jets arranged to direct a current across the rear ends of the smokeflues of the boiler, a nozzle arranged in connection with the said jets used to form a draft toward a smoke-fine in alinement with the steam-jets and located in the opposite wall of the setting, the said flue leading from the rear of the setting to the fire-chamber, and a series of combined steam-jets 23 and airlnixers arranged at the front and leading into the fire-chamber4, all arranged and combined for service, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
V SAMUEL NOOK.
