DANA BICKFORD, OF WESTERLY, RHODE ISLAND.
EMBROIDERY-SEWING STAND.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,054, dated May 1, 1860.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANA BIcKroRD, of the town of Westerly, county of INTashington, and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Article for Ladies Use, called a Sewing Companion, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and distinct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1. is a top or front View of a sewing companion constructed after my plan. Fig. 2. is a side or sectional view.

This invention relates to a very useful fancy article for ladies use.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A. is the body made of cast metal or any other substance to suit the manufacturer.
B. is a clasp for holding the work for sewing in the form of a sewing bird.
C is a box for ewelry or other small articles.
D is a cushion for pins and needles.
' E is a rack for spools.
F. F. are adjustable arms fastened with a set screw for winding silk or other material.
Gr is an emery ball. I also have applied, sometimes, scissors holders, thimble, wax, bodkin holders, &c., and I also have a great many styles and sizes of these sewing companlons.
The arms of the silk winders are arranged so as to fit all sizes of skeins, and when not in use can be detached so as not to be in the way.'
I consider that a clasp for holding the work arranged with a heavy body to prevent its slipping from the stand or table much preferable to the sewing bird, because it saves the use of a screw for that cannot be used in all places, and it is also the same with the silk winders for they can be used in any place or position without marring or injuring the finish of table or stand or any place that it might be used as it might with screw, and also it can be used in so many different situations without trouble.
Therefore what I claim and wish to secure by Letters Patent is- The arrangement of the work holder clasp B. with the heavy block A. and the boX C. all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
