JOSEPH HERBST, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SPOOL-STAN D.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 669,791, dated March 12, 1901- Application filed November 28, 1900. Serial No. 37,981. (No model-l To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH HERBST, a citizen of the United States, residing in NewYork, in the borough of Manhattan, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spool-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved spoolholder for use by manufacturers of garments in which silk thread is used, said spool-holder being intended to prevent theft of the spools and being so constructed as to permit the easy replacing of empty spools by full ones without, however, permitting the unauthorized removal of the spools by the employees using the spool-holder.
The invention consists of a spool-holder composed of a standard or support having a yoke at one end, a shaft supported in said yoke, and a reel on said shaft, composed of a head and spindles on said head, and a head hinged to one side of the yoke and provided with means locking the hinged head in position, as will be fully described hereinafter and finally claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my improved spool-holder. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section on line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section on line 4 at, Fig. l; and Fig. 5 is a detail of the thread-guide and its tension device.
Similar letters of-reference indicate corre sponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the supporting-standard, which is attached to the sewinganachine table in any suitable manner. The standard is provided at its upper end with a U-shaped yoke B, that is provided with bearings for the center shaft 1) of a reel 0, that is composed of a disk-shaped head 0, suitably attached to the shaft, and provided with a number of spindles 0 that extend from the head for supporting the spools, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. One of the arms of the yoke is provided at its upper end with a projecting stop at for the second disk-shaped head D of the reel, which head is recessed at (1, so as to fit over the arm and abut against the stop, and is hinged at its lower end at d to the base of the yoke. The upright arm of the yoke, to which the hinged head d is applied, is provided with a recess d in front of the stop, into which the bolt e of a lock E, arranged in a recess (1 in the head D, is thrown, so as to lock the said head to the yoke, hold it rigidly in position, and prevent thereby the removal of the spools from the spindles.
When the empty spools have to be replaced by full spools, the bolt e is withdrawn and the hinged head D lowered into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, so that access is given to the spindles for the removal of the emptyspools and the insertion of full spools.
To the upper end of the standard A is applied an arm F, which extends in front of the reel and carries at its end a thread-guide G, provided with a spring-actuated tension-disk g and pin g, that extends into a recess g of the fixed disk The thread on being placed between the disks of the tension-guide prevents the spool from unwinding too quickly when the sewing-machine is run at high speed and also prevents the slipping or tangling of the thread and other interference with the regular working of the machine.
As the reel turns freely in the yoke of the supporting-standard, one spool after another can be used and the thread passed over the thread -guide to the machine. The spoolholder serves as a protecting device for the silk thread used and furnishes to the operator sufficient supply of thread to last for some time without replenishing and without giving the employee access to the spools.
The spool-holder cannot only be used with sewing-machines, but also with machines for making passementerie articles, leather goods, military goods, and the like in which a protection for the thread, gimp, &c., is desired.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A spool-holder comprising a suitablysupported yoke, a reel within the yoke and composed of a transverse shaft connecting the arms of the yoke, a head on the shaft near one arm of the yoke and spindles attached to the said head and projecting toward the other arm of the yoke, a head hinged to the latter arm of the yoke, and means for locking the hinged head in position, substantially as set forth.
2. A spool-holder comprising a standard, I yoke being provided with means for engagprovided at its upper end With a U-shaped ingalocking device on the hinged head, subyoke, ashaft connecting the arms of the yoke, stantially as set forth.
a reel supported in said yoke and composed In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 5 of a head arranged on the said shaft, near my invention I have signed my name in pres- 15 one arm of the yoke, and spindles attached e'nce of two subscribing Witnesses.
