To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SANDER MORDEOAI VVEoHsLuR and SAMUEL VVEoHsLER, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga, State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in a Spool-Holder; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in spool-holders.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will hold a large number of spools so that they are readily accessible while at the same time they will be locked in the device so that they cannot be carried off or mislaid.
Our invention therefore consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter described in the specification, pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Referring to said drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation showing our improved spool-holder. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same. Fig. 8 is an end view. Fig. 4c is a detail view showing the lock.
Again referring to the drawings, 1 and 2 represent base members which are adapted to be permanently secured to any suitable support. These base members are preferably rigidly secured together by means of a bar 3. In each of the base members is formed a socket (shown at 1 and 5 respectively) and in the socket 4: is rigidly mounted an upright post 6 which forms the stationary side of the spool-carrying rack or frame. In the socket 5 is mounted a short post 7 and the said post 6 and the said post 7 are rigidly secured together by a cross bar 8, which forms the bottom member of the said spool-carrying rack. To the upper end of the post 6 is rigidly secured a top bar 9. In the said post 6 intermediate of the top and bottom bars are mounted the ends of spool-holding rods, shown at 10. These rods 10 are of the proper diameter to permit spools being slipped thereon and so that the spools will rotate freely thereon. At the top of the small post 7 are hinged two locking bars 13 and 14: and in the inner edges of said locking bars are formed grooves or recesses 15 and 16 respectively Specification of Letters Patent.

which are arranged to register with each other and when brought together are adapted to inclose the free ends of the spool-holdmg rods 10. When the said locking bars are swung together they form a removable side member for the rack and prevent the spools from being removed from the spoolholding rods, but when the said bars are swung apart the empty spools can be removed from the spool holding rods and new spools placed thereon. In the upper ends of said locking bars are formed registering slots 18, and at the free end of the top rod 9 is arranged a lock 19, the bolt 20 of which is adapted to enter the slots 18 in said looking bars and secure the said locking bars together. The key of the lock can be removed so that the frame can not be opened by any unauthorized person.
At the top of the frame and extending parallel with the top bar 9 is mounted a small rod 22 and this rod carries a collar 23 which has a hook 24: formed integral therewith. The collar 23 is arranged to slide freely on the said rod 22 so that it can be placed over any spool in the said frame and is preferably provided with a thumb screw 25 by means of which it can be secured against movement on the said rod. At the bottom of the frame and extending from side to side thereof is mounted a coil spring 26, the coils of which are arranged very closely together, and the purpose of this spring is to provide a means for anchoring or holding the free ends of the thread from the various spools so that the thread will not unwind or become entangled.
In order to space the spool from which the thread is being drawn from the spools in use a removable spacing device 27 is provided which is preferably made ofwire and is adapted to be sprung over two of the spool-supporting rods so as to inclose the spool from which the thread is being drawn and prevent the said spool from coming in contact with the neighboring spools.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that our invention provides a very compact spool-holding frame or rack which will positively prevent the spools when in use from being carried oil or mislaid. The rack also holds the spools in such a position that they are readily accessible so that the operator need not lose any time in mounting the spool on the machine because all that is necpssary is to first separate the spool whl h 5 to be used from the adjoining spools by means of the spacing device and then carry the thread from the spool through the hook on the bar at the top of the frame and then down to the machine and the thread will feed freely as desired. We do not intend to limit ourselves to the exact construction claimed, as certain variations may be made in the construction without departing from the spirit of our invention.
What We claim is.-
1. In a spool-holding rack, the combination of base members, a frame mounted on said base members and open at one side, spool-holding rods mounted in said frame, a pair of locking bars hingedly mounted at I the open side of said frame, said bars being provided with grooves adapted to receive the free ends of the spool-holding rods, and means for securing the two locking bars together.
2. In a spool-holding .rack, the combination of base members, a rigid frame mounted on said base members, said frame having an open s1de,,spood-hold1ng rods mounted in said frame, a pair of locking bars pivotally mounted at their lower ends at the open side of said frame, said bars being provided with grooves adapted to receive the free ends of the spool-holding rods, means for securing said locking bars together and to said frame, a thread guiding device supported at the top of the frame and adjustable longitudinallv thereof, a coiled spring arranged at the bottom of the frame and adapted to engage the free ends of the going specification, in the presence of two witnesses SANDER MORDECAI WECHSLER.
