UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OTIS (l. SMITH, OF ALAMOSA, COLORADO.
RIBBON-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,423, dated November 19, 1889.
Application filed June 25, 1889. Serial No. 315,544. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTIS G. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alamosa, in the county of Conejos and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Ribbon-Holder,ot' which the following is a specitication.
The invention relates to improvements in ribbon-holders.
The object of the present invention is to provide a ribbon-holder of simple, inexpensive, and compact construction, from which a bolt of ribbon may be readily removed and replaced, and which will show at a glance the quantity of ribbon contained therein.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out'in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of a ribbon-holder constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional View. Fig. 3 is a central vertical sectional view; and Fig. -l is a detail perspective view of the box, the cover and bolt ot' ribbon being removed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,
A designates a circular box designed to hold a bolt of ribbon B, and provided with a centrally -located spindle C, upon which the boltv turns to unroll or rewind the ribbon B. The box A has a vertical opening a., which extends the entire height ot the box A and permits the holder to contain ribbon as wide as the heighth of the box A, thereby enabling the box to be entirely filled and the ribbon to be displayed to a great advantage. The side of the box A at the opening a is strengthened by cleats D, which have their edges farther from the opening a inclined and beveled on their inner sides, thereby formingbetween the cleats D and the side of the box recesses which are designed to receive the sides of an opening e in a cover E. The sides of the opening e are slightly inclined, whereby when the cover is put in place it will be wedged in the recess formed by the cleats D and be securely retained in place.
The ribbon B is wound upon a sleeve F, which rotates upon the spindle C to wind and unwind the ribbon, and the said sleeve may readily be removed from and placed upon the spindle C. The upper end of the sleeve is provided across its upper end with a piece of wiref, which serves as a handle to turn the sleeve.
The cover has a central opening e', to permit access to the handle, and is provided with a slot e2, whifchernables the amount of ribbon on the sleefe t0 blseh without removing the cover.
In order to hold the ribb and dispense with pinning the same, the bo is provided with an elastic band G, which allows the ribbon to be drawn from the holder without removing it from under the elastic band G.
The upper end of the spindle C in the box A has a recess C2, to admit the thumb and finger of the operator, who grasps the Wire or handle for the purpose of revolving the sleeve F, so as to wind the ribbon upon said sleeve.
From the foregoing it will readily be seen that ribbon-holders constructed in accordance with the invention are of simple and economic construction, will show at a glance the quantity of ribbon, and Will permit the ribbon to be readily removed and replaced.
What I claim isl. A ribbon-holder comprising the box having a ribbon -opening extending its entire width and provided with a spindle, and the cover having the central opening e. and the opening e in its side, substantially as described.
2. A ribbon-holder comprising the box having the ribbon-opening a and the .spindle C, the cover provided with the central opening e', and the opening e in its side, and the sleeve receiving the ribbon and turning on the spindle, substantially as described.
3. A ribbon-holder comprising the box having the ribbon-opening, the cleats arranged upon the side of the opening and forming recesses between them and the side of the box and the spindle C, the cover provided with the central opening and the opening in its side, and the sleeve, substantially as described.
el. A ribbon-holder comprising the box having the ribbon-opening, the cleats arranged upon the sides of the opening and having their edges farther from the opening inclined and beveled, and the spindle, the cover provided with the central opening, and the opening c, having inclined sides, and the sleeve provided With the Wire f across its top, substantially as described.
5. A ribbon-holder comprising the box having a ribbon-opening and provided with the spindle, and the cover having` the central Aopening and the slot e2, whereby a quantity of ribbon may be seen, substantially as described.
(i. The combination of a vertically-slotted box having a centrally-located spindle, a
sleeve mountedupon said spindle, and a slotted cover having a central opening through which access may be had to said spindle, substantially as specified.
