UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAH II. CUSI-IIN G, OF PLATTSMOUTH, NEBRASKA.
BILL OR FILE HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,155, dated December 10, 1889.
Application filed July 20, 1889- $erial1lo. 318,097. (No model.)
To all 1071 0771, it "um-y OOH/6077b.
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. CUsHINe, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plattsmouth, in the county of Cass and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bill or File Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specilication.
Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section, and Fig. 3 is a view of the package and needle detached.
The object of my invention is to provide a convenient device for filing bank -deposit tickets, postal-cards, bills, and similar papers, so that they may be put up in packages for ready reference; and it consists of an oblong base made of metal or other suitable material with a supporting-edge, provided at one end with a spool of cord mounted on a bearing, and having an upright hollow standard, into the upper end of which is inserted the eye end of a removable needle.
In the drawings, A is an oblong base made of metal or other suitable material with a downward-so pportin g base, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
B is a supporting-arm rigidly attached to one end and near one side of the base.
0 is an axle or bearing connected to the outer end of this arm at right angle to the same and parallel with the end of the base.
E is a spool of cord mounted on the axle.
Between the spool and the supporting-arm B, and upon the axle C, is a spiral spring I), and upon the outer end of the axle a screwnut c, for the purpose of preventing the spool from revolving too freely.
D is a hollow standard, of any desirable length, inserted in a hole a by a thread-screw or otherwise, as shown. Into this hollow standard is inserted a needle F, having a shank long enough to allow its eye K to project below the upper side of the base, and also having its point cl provided with a shoulder f of the requisite size to fit upon the upper end 6 of the standard.
In operating my device the spool E, provided with cord 6, is mounted upon the axle O, and by means of the nut c and spiral spring I) kept from turning freely. The loose end of the cord g is passed through a hole 2' in the rim of the base and attached to the eye K of the needle.
Deposit-tickets, postal-cards, bills, or similar papers may now be placed upon the standard in any order desired. Then there is the desired numbeig they can be removed with the needle, the cord 9 following. The cord is then pulled through the package and used for tying it up, as shown.
In order that the device may work easily and the cord not run from the spool too freely, a tension is applied by means of the nut c and spiral spring b, as desired.
hen one package has been made up, a second and third ormore can be made in the same manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is I A device for filing bank-deposit tickets, postal-cards, bills, and similar papers, consisting of a base A with ahollow standard D, provided with a needle F, mounted therein, in combination with a spool of cord E, provided with an adjustable tension, substantially as herein described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VILLIAM H. CUSIIING. lVitnesses:
FRED W. CARRU'IH, F. MoGoUnT.
