Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 28, T9315.
Application led January 25, 1915. Serial It o. 4,277.
To all 'Lo/tom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ELBERT J. Tionnnon, a citizen of the United States, residing at eaufort, in the county of Franklin and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cord- Holders; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to cord holders and the primary object of the invention is to provide a device for holding a cord taut about an envelop or package.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device as specied, which i embodies a casing having one side thereof detachably connected to the main body of the casing, and to form a depending sleeve upon the inner surface of the removable side, which sleeve rotatably supports a cord retaining spool; to provide the spool with a facial recess in which is positioned a coil spring, which spring is coiled oppositely to the direction of the coiling or winding of the cord upon the spool, so as to coil the spring upon the unwinding of the cord the spool, whereby when the cord is released from tension, the unwinding of the spring will rewind the cord upon the spool.
iVith the foregoing' and other objects in view this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In describing' the invention in detail, reference will be rawings wherein lil u like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved cord holder, showing the same applied to a package, Fig. 2 is a. cross sectional view through the improved cord holder, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the improved cord holder.
eferring more particularly to the draw- 1 designates the casing of the cord holder, which is substantially circular in plan, and includes a base 2 and ing side wall 3 which extends vertically upward from the base 2. cover plate 4t is provided for positioning' upon the upperI edge of theupstanding side 3, and it is provided with an annular 1ecess 5 formed in the Linder surface of its marginal edOe, which recess receives the upper edge of the upstanding side wall 3, for forming a firm connection between the cover plate 4 and the casing 1, as is clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. The cover plate 4 has a sleeve 6 formed integrally therewith and extending downwardly from the central axis of the inner surface of the same, which sleeve is provided with a pair of internally screw threaded recesses 7 and 8. The recess 7 extends inwardly into the sleeve, and through the plate il, from the outer side of the plate, and is provided for detachably connecting a pin 9, to the casing 1, the purpose Vof which will be hereinafter more fully described.
he internally screw threaded recess 8 extends upwardly into the sleeve from its inner end, and communicates with an openin r 10, which is formed in the base 2. The opening 10 and the recess 8 are provided for receiving a screw 11 for attaching and securely holding the cover plate et upon the upper edge of the upstanding side 3 of the casing 1 A spool 12 is rotatably mounted upon the sleeve 6 and provided with' a recess 13 eXtending into the same, from the base of the spool which engages the inner surface of the base 2 of the casing 1. The recess 13 is prouided for receiving a coil spring lll, which is coiled about the has one end secured thereto. The other end of the coil spring 1l is inserted through an opening 15 formed in the drum portion of the spool, and passes partially about the circumference or peripher f of the drum portion 16 of the spool and through an opening 17 formed therein, and back into the recess 13, which securely connects the outer end of the coil spring 14 to the spindle of the spool 12. The drum lthird opening 18 extendingtherethrough,
also passes through and has one end thereof tied the cord, for securely connecting the cord to the drum portion. The cord 19 is wound or coiled about the spindle 16 of the spool, oppositely to the ceiling of the spring le, Aaudit has .one end extending through an sleeve 6 and opening 20, which is formed in the upstanding side 3 of the casing 1. The outer end of the cord 19, which extends out of the casing 1, has a ring 22 secured to its outer end to prevent the end of the cord from passing through the opening 20.
The pin 9 has an enlarged head 24 formed upon its outer end, which extends out of the bore or recess 7. The head 24 is corrugated and has a spiral spring 25 coiled about the same. One end of the spiral spring 25 is positioned beneath the under surface of the head Q4, so that when the screw threaded in 9 is inserted in the bore 7, the lower end of the spring 25 will be securely clamped between the under surface of the head 24 and the outer surface of the cover plate 4. The upper end of the spring 25 extends above the top of the head 24, and is provided for receiving the end of the cord 19 therebetween, for securely clamping it between adjacent convolutions of the spiral spring, for preventing slipping of the cord, and for holding it in position about a package, as is indicated in Fig. 1, against the tension of the coil spring 14.
In the operation of the improved cord holder; the casing 1 is made small in size, so that the cord holder may be employed as a package tie, if desired. llhen the cord holder is used as a package tie, the base 2 is placed iny engagement with the surface of the package which is to be tied, and the cord 19 is unwound from the spool 12, and-passed about the package in any desired manner, in Fig. 1, the cord 1.9 is shown as passed crosswise about the package, then wound or passed once about the pin 9, and then along Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Washington, D. C.
the length of the package, having its free end inserted between the outermost convolutions of the spiral spring 25, for holding the cord taut about the package, and against the unwinding action of the spring 14. The
spring 14 is coiled about the sleeve 6, llppositely to the direction of the ceiling or winding of the cord 19 upon the spool, so that when the cord is unwound from the spool, the spring will be wound upon the sleeve 6, whereby when the cord is released from tension, the unwinding of the spring will automatically rewind the cord upon the spool.
In reducing the invention to practice, certain minor features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may necessitate alterations to which the patentee is entitled provided such alterations are comprehended within the scopeofwhat is claimed.
1n a cord holder, a casing, a spring controlled cord retaining spool rotatably mounted within said casing, a pin detachably carried by said casing, an enlarged head formed upon said pin, a spiral spring coiled about said head and having its outer end eX- tending above the outer end of said head for receiving between the outer convolutions thereof the end of said cord for holding it against the tension of the spring carried by said spool.
In testimony whereof aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
