UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
CHARLES D. FORD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SLEEVE-SUPPORTER- Application filed October 21, 1882. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES D. FORD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sleeve-Supporters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sleeve-supporters for shirts or similar garments; and it consists in a strip of tape inclosed in a sheath on the and projecting at its upper end through an opening in the yoke on the shoulder, said strip being provided with button-holes, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 isa perspective view of a shirt having my inven ion attached, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the shoulder and part of the body and. sleeve of the same. I
'A represents a shirt, of which B is the yoke, and O the sleeve. On the inside of the sleeve is a strip of cloth, D, stitched along its edges and lower end to thesleeve, to form a sort of sheath, in which I place a strip of tape or cloth, E, which is secured at its lower end by the same stitching that secures the sheath. This strip or tapeEhas its upper end passed through a slit or opening, b, in the yoke upon the shoulthis slit b the yoke is providedwith a button or similar device, b,while the tape E is provided at suitable intervals with a series of button-holes, c.
this end, together with When the shirt is in ordinary use,the sleeve hangs free, as in ordinary shirts, and the tape E is entirely inclosed within the sheath D,eX- cept its extreme upper end, which projects slightly through the open'ng b in the yoke, and the button, is entirely covered by the vest. \Vhen it is desired to shorten the sleeve for a wearer with short arms, or to hold them up out of the way when at work, the tape is drawn up to any desired height and secured by passing one of the button-holes 0 over the button b. The end of the tape passing through the yoke up on the shoulder is. at
pears as usual.
The device is very simple and effective, easily used, and neat in appearance, and, withal, very inexpensive, and may be applied equally as well to old garments as to those in process of construction.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a sleeve-supporter, the shirt A, provided with button 11 and slit b through the yoke upon the shoulder, in combination with a tape, E, having holes 0 c, and inclosed in a sheath or pocket, D, on the inner side of the sleeve, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES D. FORD.
