POCKET.
srncrrrcA'rroN forming part of Letters Patent No. 278,587, aateaivray 2o, 188e.
I Application iiledNovcmber 24,1882. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern Be' it known that I, ROBERT Nicol., J r., of` Oshkosh, in the county of `Winnebago and` 'State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and new and improved pocket for holding pen--` cils, eombs, vpocketscissors, a watch, money, and other articles, in such a manner that the said articles cannot be dropped out of the pocket, and cannot lbe removed from the same` without exerting sufcient force to call the attention of the owner tothe attempt being o made to remove the articles.
The invention consists in a pocket which is 'provided with a longitudinal partition which is secured between `its ends to one of the sides of the pocket, whereby a vseries of compartments for pencils, watches, money, toilet articles, Svc., will be formed, which articles are held within the pocket by an elastic band passed around the same, whichelastic bandis preferably held in` a metal strip secured 'to one side ofthe pocket, as hereinafter fully described, andpointed out in the claims.
Referenceis to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciiication, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
l Figure 1 is a perspective view of my im` proved pencil and watch pocket.. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the. same on th line or fr, Fig. 2. i
" y The pocket A is made of leather, cloth, buckskin, duck, canvas, or any other suitable material, pliable leather being preferred. The pocket is providedwith a longitudinal partition, B, whichidivides the pocket into two parts longitudinally,ot' whichone part is to be used for a watch or money, and the other partis to be used for pencils,a comb, 'pocketscissors, a tooth-brush, or other toilet articles that are to be carried in the pocket. The longitudinal partition B is att'ached to one of the sides of the pocket for the purpose of dividingthe comb and pencil pocket into two parts,
G is for a comb and other toilet articles, and
Disfor a' pencil or pen holder. A metal` strip, E, having the longitudinal edges bent over to form grooved flanges, is attached to the outer surface of one of the sides of the pocket in such a manner that that side of the strip containing the grooveid flanges will be exposed.` An elastic band, F, is passed around the pocket and rests on the strip E, the edges of the elastic` band passing within the grooved flanges of the 'said strip. The
elastic band presses the sides of the pocket together and presses ou the objects contained in the pocket, and 4thus prevents them from dropping out, and also affords some resistance to drawing them out of the pocket, the latter being held extended in the direction of its width by the metal strip. For instance, if a Watchl :is placed in the pocket, the elastic band will press the sides of the pocket togetherI above the top of the Watch, and thus render it difficult for any other person than the owner to withdraw the watch.
In place of the elasticband, a spring of any other kind can be used to press the sides of the pocket together.
A shield, G, of cloth or o to the side of the pocket in such a manner as to overlap and cover the strip E, andthus pre-` vent the same from rubbing against the cloth of the garment and wearing o and ruining the same.
AThis pocket is to be attached to vests, but it can be attached to coats or other garments as well. worn out it can easily be replaced by another Without removing the pocket from the garment.4
Having thus fully described my-inveutiou, I vclaim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent-` In case the elastic band becomes C andD, as shown in Fig. 3, of which parts 5o leather, is attached 1. The combination, with apocket,of arigid herein shown and described.
4. The combination, withy the pocket A, of the metal strip Efthe elastic'bandF, and the zo shield Gr, substantially as-herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth. l
ROBERT NICOL, JR.
strip secured to the pocket and an elastic band surrounding,` the pocket, substantially as 3. The combination, with a pocket, of the metal strip E, secured to the same, and the elastic baud F, heid to the said metal strip, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
