UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OTTO F. OSTERGREN AND ALEXANDER K. SOHAAP, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
GARM ENT-PROTECTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 446,819, dated February 17, 1891. Application filed June 18, 1890. Serial No. 355,909. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Orro F. Osrnneann and ALEXANDER K. SOHAAP, of Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Garment-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates, generally, to garments protectors, and particularly to a detachable holder adapted to be placed around the trousers-legs near their bottoms, grasping the rear side of the ankle or leg of the wearer, thus holding the trousers at the proper height and giving them the proper set upon the front side of the leg and foot.
The object of our invention is to produce a device of the character described that shall be simple, cheap, durable, ornamental, and efficient; and with this object in view our invention consists in the peculiar construction of certain details and the novel combination of several parts, such as shown in the accompanying drawings and more fully explained hereinafter.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, and inwhich the same letters of reference indicate the same or correspond ing parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved protector, illustrating the method of using the same. Fig. 2 is a view showing the method of carrying the protector when not in use. Fig. 3 isa perspective view of the protector. Fig. at is a horizontal section of the same.-
In the embodiment of our invention we employ a strip A of thin fiat elastic material, preferably sheetsteel that has been tempered blue or enameled, and bend said strip into the form of a circle, the ends of said strip approaching each other, thus forming a split elastic band. The bands are made in various sizes to suit different-sized persons, and are adapted to be placed around the trousers leg upon the rear side near the bottom, gently claspin g the trousers to the rear side of the leg or ankle, which holds the trousers-bottoms at any desired height and also gives the front side of the trousers-deg the proper set upon the front side of leg and foot of wearer.
Should it be "desired to make the trousers very small around the bottom, as is often needed when riding bicycles, horses, or wearing boots, the trousers can be wrapped close to the leg and the band placed around the same, thus holding them in that position. lVhen theband is not in use upon the trousers it can be conveniently carried around the leg just above the shoe, as most clearly shown in Fig. 2. In this way it is no inconvenience whatever, and can be removed at any time and applied to the trousers, as shown in Fig. 1.
In order to prevent the ends of the band binding against the trousers, and also to give the band a larger area to press upon the trousers and thereby give them a better set, we provide the said ends with enlargements B. This enlargement of the end of the band is formed by rolling its ends back upon themselves, as at B, the extreme end of the band being brought back close to the body thereof, thus preventing clothing, &c., from being caught; and we also bring in the ends of the band toward its'center, as at B, thus causing a portion of the roll B thereon to normally lie within the line that would be described if the circular form of the body of the band were continued,'and we thus cause the band to grasp the trousers most firmly at its ends, at which points the greatest strain will come.
It is obvious that the device is also adapted for use as a sleeve-supporter.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described device for riders use, consisting of the curved contractile clasp of flat spring metal protected at the ends, as shown, for clasping and holding garments in place around the limbs of the wearer, substantially as set forth.
OTTO F. OSTERGREN. ALEXANDER K. SCHAAP.
