Description

D. HEPP. PEN HOLDER.
No. 276,399. Patented Apr.Z4,18 83.
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL HEPP, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PEN-HOLDER..
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 276,399, dated April 24, 1883. Application filed December 30, 1882. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL .HEPP, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Pen-Holders and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pen-holders; and it has for its object to providea pen-holder by means of which several parallel lines can be drawn at one stroke, the distance between the lines being varied bythe adjustment of one of the pen-holders, and to provide a means whereby one of the penscan be thrown out of position and the instrument used in the ordi nary manner; and to this end my invention consists in connecting two pen-holders to each other by a pivot, as will he hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
In the annexed drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 represents the arrangement of the holders on the stafl' with the pen in position. Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing one of the pens thrown out of position. Fig. 2 shows the forms of the blanks, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the holder detached.
Referring to the drawings, Arepresents the staff, which carries a metal holder, B. Over this holder is placed the embracing-tube U, which is provided with side wings O 0. To this ring 0 is attached a supplemental penholder, D, which is provided with side wings D D, the parts 0 and D being united to each other by a pivot, a, as shown. These parts of the holder are made from blanks, as shown in Fig. 2, which blanks are bent in form in the usual manner, and, if desirable, the penholder on the plate D may be formed so as to provide wings b b, which hold the pen in position, as shown in Fig. 1; or an inner tube, as shown at E in Fig. 2, may be provided.
The manner of using this device is as follows: The'thimble or tube 0 is placed over an ordinary pen-holder, and the pens c and d,
which may be of the usual form, or doublenibbed, if desirable, are placed in the holder, and the point of the pen dis adjusted by moving the parts upon the pivot at until the desired distance between the points of the pens is reached, when two or more parallel lines can be drawn at the same stroke.
When it is desirable to use only one pen the pen-holder D may be swung out of place, as shown in Fig. 3.
This invention is particularly useful in drawing parallel lines for book-keeping and for other analogous purposes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isr As an improved attachment for pen-holders, the thimble 0, provided with side wings, and attached by a pivot to a pen-holding device, D, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereofI affix mysignature in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL HEPP.
