Description

m M M W ATTORNEY United States Patent FLOOR FURNACE GUARD Louis A. Scherlf, Wichita Falls, Tex.
Application July 24, 1953, Serial No. 379,043
1 Claim. (Cl. 98-103) This invention relates to guards for floor furnaces and has for its primary object the provision of a device for protecting small children from being burned.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a floor furnace guard of relatively light construction, yet one which cannot be moved by a small child.
Another object of the invention is to provide a light weight floor furnace guard, yet one which is secured against lateral displacement from the floor furnace grate.
A further object of the invention is to provide a floor furnace guard so constructed that toys or the like will roll off of the same and thereby prevent their burning.
These and other objects of the invention will become apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure l is a perspective view of a floor furnace guard embodying the features of the invention and showing the same in position over a floor furnace grate.
Figure 2 is a transverse vertical section of the construction and arrangement shown in Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a broken perspective view of one of the corners of the frame of the present guard.
The form of the invention shown is for use over a floor furnace it) installed beneath a floor 11 and having a grate 12 over the floor furnace well 13. The grate 12 is rectangular and is comprised of cross bars 14 and ordinarily prevents objects from falling into the well 13.
The present guard 15 includes parallel sides and end frame members 16 and 17 which are welded together to form a frame substantially equal the size of the rectangle defined by the cross bars 14. End rods 18, which are substantially semicircular, are welded to the ends of the side members 16, and a similar arcuate rod 19 is secured to the side members intermediate their ends. The three arcuate 2,743,660 Patented May 1, 1956 rods define a semicylindn'cal area over which large mesh screen 20 is secured. Similarly, the semicircular ends are provided with large mesh screen 21, thus completely enclosing the grate 12 of the floor furnace 10. As shown in Figures 2 and 3, the lower ends of the end rods 18 project downwardly, as at 22, into the furnace well 13 and between the cross bars 14 of the grate 12 thereby securing the assembled guard against lateral displacement. If desired, only two opposite corners may be provided with such depending projections 22.
As shown in Figure 2, the furnace is spaced from the wall of the well 13 for permitting circulation of air therearound, and whereby the heat from the furnace is directed to the central area of the grate 12. Thus, the sides and end of the present guard do not become hot, and generally the heat is somewhat dissipated by the time the same reaches the upper curved portion of the described guard assembly. By reason of such construction a child touching the guard will not be burned, the most toys thrown by a small child will roll ofi of the curved upper surface.
The invention is not limited to the construction herein shown and described, but may be made in many ways within the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
For use in combination with a floor furnace having a grate thereover substantially level with the floor in which the furnace is installed, a floor furnace guard comprising a rectangular base frame of parallel rods, arcuate rods secured to the ends of said rectangular base frame and positioned thereabove, at least one intermediate arcuate rod secured to the side rods of said base frame and extending thereabove, all of said arcuate rods being of the same configuration and curved at their highest portions, a perforated covering over said arcuate rods and across the end rods, and depending projections at opposite corners of said frame arranged to be received within corresponding corners of said grate.
