Description
Dec. 12, 1939. H. E. HAGENBUCH DRAFT CONTROL MEANS FOR GAS HEATERS Filed Sept. 23, 1938 HEHagen $uo/1 ATTORNEYS Patented Dec. 12, 1939 PATENT OFFICE DRAFT CONTROL MEANS FOR- GAS HEATERS Harry E, Hagenbuch, Oklahoma City, Okla.
Application September 23, 1938, Serial No. 231,427
4Claims.
My invention relates to down draft control means for water; heaters and the like and has as one of the principal objects thereof the provision of means for so directing the down draft as to preclude the latter from extinguishing the flame'of the pilot light within said heater and thereby eliminating the escape of gas and resultant dangers.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which is simple in construction, durable in use, highly eflicient in operation and economical in manufacture.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described so constructed and arranged as to be attached between a water heater and the flue thereof without modifying said flue or heater.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, appended claims and annexed drawing.
Referring to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through my invention illustrating the same as applied to a water heater.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
In practicing my invention I provide a pair of upper and lower spaced collar sections 5 and 6 respectively, of a draft hood construction, the upper section 5 adapted to be secured within the lower end of a flue I and the lower section 6 secured about a flange 8 of a water heater 9.
The upper section 5, adjacent the lower end thereof, is formed with an outwardly offset and III which.
circumferentially extending portion supports on said section 5 the .upper end of a frustrum shaped hood I I the lower end of which is spaced slightly above the upper end of the collar section.
The hood II and said section 5 are secured in spaced relation above the section 8 by means 5 of a ternary of straps II, the upper and lower ends of the latter being secured, by means of rivets, the lower and upper ends of the sections 5 and B respectively as clearly illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawing. Said straps l2, intermediate the ends thereof, are fashioned with outwardly extending U-shaped sections l3 formed with horizontally disposed seats l4 accommodating therein the outer end section of a disk IS, the latter being of a greater diameter than the diameter of said upper and lower collar sections 5 and 6 whereby down draft through the collar section 5 is deflected outwardly of said disk l5 and precluded from entering downwardly through the collar section 6 into the water heater 5 9 thereby precluding extinguishing of a pilot flame therein.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that I have provided a simple and emcient device whereby down drafts from dues of gas heaters are 1 precluded from extinguishing the pilot lights of said heaters and causing escape of gas therefrom. It is to be distinctly understood that various changes and modifications in the construction and arrangement of the parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim 1. In a gas water heater flue hood construc- 20 tion, a pair of upper and lower collar sections adapted for connection with a flue and a draft opening of a gas water heater respectively, straps connecting said sections together in spaced relation and formed with laterally disposed seats 25 between said sections, a disk secured in said seats and between said sections, said disk being of a larger diameter thansaid lower section whereby to deflect down draft from said upper section away from said lower section. 1
2. In a gas water heater flue hood construction, upper and lower collar sections adapted for connection with a flue and a draft opening of a gas water heater respectively, elements connecting said sections together in spaced relation 35 and formed with laterally disposed portions between said sections, and a disk fixed to said portions between said elements and of a larger diameter than said lower section whereby to deflect down draft from said upper section away 40 from said lower section.
3. The elements of claim 1 as set forth and defined therein including, a hood carried by said upper section and terminating subjacent of the latter and superjacent of said lower section and 45 coacting with said disk to direct said down draft without said lower section.
4. The elements of claim 2 as set forth and defined therein including, a hood carried by said upper section and terminating subjacent of the latter and superjacent of said lower section and coacting with said disk to direct said down draft HARRY E. HAGENBUCH.
