PATENT OFFICE.
ALVA G. FLOYD, OF FAIRBLUFF, NORTHl CAROLINA.
ToBAcco-FLUE SCREEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 738,425, dated September 8, 1903. Application filed April 2l, 1903. Serial No.153,629. (No model.)
To a/ZZ wwm/ t may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVA G. FLOYD, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Fairbluff, in the county of Columbus and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Tobacco-Fine Screen, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to driers, and is primarily intended for use in curing tobacco.
The common practice in curing tobacco is to suspend the leaves upon sticks or hangers above the heat-generators, so that the heat will radiate between said leaves and evaporate the moisture therefrom. During the process of curing by this process parts of the leaves sometimes become detached and contact with the heat-generating medium, causing the leaves to become ignited, and thus endanger the entire contents of the dry house or barn.
It is the purpose of my invention to guard against this igniting of the leaves and at the same time insure a perfectly free and even evaporation of the moisture contained in the uncured leaves.
To this end the invention consists in certain novel details of construction, to be specifically referred to hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, and in which- Figure l is a detail perspective view of two of the frame members with the cover detached, and Fig. 2 is an endview of one of the frame members with the cover applied.
The reference-numeral 1 designates a section of a flue or tube in communication with a suitable source of supply by means of which the walls of the flue can be heated.
In order that the tobacco will not come in contact with the flue, I provide a guard upon which the leaves can rest, but be held out of contact with the flue. This guard consists of a frame and a cover therefor.
The frame comprises the base members 2 and 3, which are formed with intermediate arched portions 4, to be seated upon the flue 1. These base members 2 and 3 are formed with oppositely-disposed armsand 6, carrying slotted terminals 7 and 8, which form jaws for the reception of the edges of the :foraminated sheet 9, covering the frame, and
to permit the head to radiate from the flue, but to prevent the leaves coming in contact therewith. The sheet 9 is superimposed above the members 2 and 3, in which position it is held by the arcuate rests 10 and 11, connected to the members 2 and 3 by the spacing members 12 and 13.
In actual practice it is contemplated to form the frame of the support of a single piece, although it isobvious that it could be constructed of sheet metal and riveted together, if desired. The arched base members will be held in rigid contact with the flue 1 by the fastening devices 14, passing through the slotted terminals 7 and and through the sheet 9, which is secu red to the frame by said fastening devices. The fastening devices can be caused to engage the flue by turning them in the threaded openings in the slotted terminal portion of the arms 5 and 6.
While this invention is primarilyintended to be used for drying tobacco, it is obvious that it could be used for a multiplicity of purposes, particularly where an article is to be heated or dried over a ue or similar device. invention as a tobacco-drier, but reserve the right to put it to any use for which it is adapted.
Any number of the frame members 2 and 3 Ido not limit myself to the use of this can be employed to suit the requirements of any particular case.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new is 1. A tobacco-iiue guard comprising a sheet and a support for said sheet having slotted terminals engaging said sheet.
2. A tobacco-flue guard comprising a sheet, a support for said sheet and jaws removably engaging said sheet. i Y
3. A tobacco-due guard comprising a support, a sheet carried by said support and means for removably securing said sheet to the support.
1i. In combination with a iiue, a frame on said flue, a cover on the frame and devices for securing the cover to the frame and for securing the frame to the flue.
5. In combination with an arched frame, a sheet carried by the frame and terminal engaging devices on the frame and removably engaging the sheet.
IOO
bers, and a shelf resting upon the supporting members.
9. A tobacco-flue guard comprising arched base members, a shelf and supporting members for the shelf to space it away from the base members.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aiXed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ALVA G. FLOYD.
