SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 600,773, dated March 15, 1898.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MELVIN D. FARRIN, residing at Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Scaffold-Bracket, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a scaifold-bracket that can be folded into a compact form, and is designed for use more particularly on roofs when shingling them. I
The object of my invention is to provide a safe and durable bracket for scaffolding purposes that can be easily and quickly put into place without the use of nails and which when not in use can be folded into a compact form. I accomplish this object by providing a suitable base provided with spurs at each end thereof, which are adapted to be embedded in the roof, and pivoting at one end a pair of supporting-arms, which are connected at their other ends with a supporting-stand and which rests on the other end of the base. I also provide a clamping means at one end of the base to secure it against accidental slipping.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe the same, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a View showinga pair of brackets constructed according to my invention secured in place on a roof. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the base, showing the means for fastening itat one end; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a single bracket.
In the said drawings, A represents the base portion of my bracket, which may be of wood or any other desired material. It is pro vided with the spurs B and the openings E at one end, while at its other end it is provided with the spurs B and an additional fastening means. This means consists of a flat steel spring F, secured at one end to the base and bent away therefrom, so that it can be easily pushed under a shingle, as shown in Fig. 2, and the thumb-screw G connected with it, so that when the spring is under the shingle the thumb-screw is turned to draw the spring and that end of the base together Serial No. 637,575. II represents a pair of supporting-arms pivotally connected at one of their ends to the upper end of the base in the manner shown. These arms, which carry the scaffolding-arms, are adapted to be. supported in a horizontal position, and to do this I provide the standard I, which is pivotally connected to the other ends of the arms. The lower end of the standard I fits in any one of the openings E in the base, according to the pitch of the roof.
The manner of securing the bracket in position will be readily understood, and it will be seen from the foregoing description that I have provided a simple arrangement for supporting scaffolding on an inclined roof which can be easily and quickly applied.
To fold the bracket,'the standard is taken out of the opening in the end of the base and folded between the supporting-arms, and it is then brought down to rest on the top of the base.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a scaffold-bracket, the combination of the base provided with the spurs at each end thereof, a spring secured at one end to one end of the base, a thumb-screw connected with said spring, and a pair of supportingarms connected with said base, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination in a scaffold-bracket, of a base A having spurs B and spring F, of arms II pivoted upon said base, a standard I in pivotal connection with said arms and its lower end adapted to enter openings E- provided in said base, and a thumb-screw Gin connection with said base and operating in connection with said spring, all substantially as herein shown and set forth.
