Description

H. G. 81; E. L. SHANAHAN. Combined Step-Ladder and Ironing-Table.
Patented May 6, 1879.
jgTJV'ESSES 5n I a $4 W By flttorneyd NJETERS PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHE UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HENRY O. SHANAHAN AND EDWARD L. SHANAHAN, OF SOUTH BEND, IND.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED STEP-LADDER AND IRONING-TABLE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 215,171, dated May 6, 1879; application filed November 11, 1878.
To all whom/it may concern.-
Be it known that we, HENRY O. SHANA- HAN and EDWARD L. SHANAHAN, of South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Step-Ladder and Ironing-Board; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a combined step-ladder and ironing-board.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referrin g to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the main portion of a step-ladder made in the usual form, but having no steps excepting at the upper and lower part. Within the main ladder A is a supplementary frame, B, having steps, and pivoted on a round, 0, to the main ladder, so that the ladder-frame can be moved outwardly to form legs and make a support for the ironing-board D, when the same is used as seen in Fig. 2.
E represents avmetallic rod, which has a screw-thread at one end, by which means it is connected by a nut and adj ustably secured to a bar near the top of the main laddenframe A. The other end of said rod is hooked as seen.
When the ironing-board is in proper position for use, the rod E is in aposition parallel to that of board D, and the supplemental frame is turned on its pivot at an angle forward, so that the upper round, I), of said frame catches under the hooked end of the rod.
The bars of the frame B and the bars of the main frame A are at opposite angles, and form feet to support the ironing-board in a firm manner. When the device is used as a step-ladder, as seen in Fig. 1, the inner frame, B, is folded within the frame A and theboard D thrown out, said board being hinged to the ladder and provided with. feet a a, and forms a back brace for the ladder.
This construction forms a simple and handy device, accomplishing a twofold purpose Without taking up much room.
We are aware that an ironing-board has been combined with astep-ladder, and hence we do not claim such, broadly, as ourinvention.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The inner frame, B, pivoted to the frame A, in combination with theironing-board D and the hooked rod E, all substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the frame A and inner pivoted frame, B, forming a step-ladder, the ironing-board D, pivoted in the frame A, and the feet a a, connected to the ironingboard, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 23d day of October, 1878.
HENRY G. SHANAHAN. EDWARD L. SHANAHAN.
