Description

sept- 6, 1955 .J. J. FOGLIO SIMULATED SHOW HANDKERCHIEF DEVICE Filed May 10, 1954 FIG. 5
lNVENTOR J. J. FOGL /0 A TTORNE V Patented Sept. 6, 1955 United States Patent Office z',116;7s's* SIMULATED-SHOW. HANDKERCHIEF DEVICE James J; Foglio,NewRochelle; N. Y. Application 'May-10,';1954,flSerial *No.-428,487 2' Claims. c1: 2'-z19 This invention relates to a simulated show, handkerchief devicefor' displaying in'the handkerchief. pocket of an outer' garment fabric according to the particular desire ofitheuser;
An objejctjof the 'invention'is to provide a device ,which will 'not cause bulging 'ofthe 'pocket'ffor" example the chest pocket of mens coats, and will show the corners of what appears to be a handkerchief and prevent sliding of the displayed corners down into the pocket.
A further object is to provide a device with a readily removable show corner to enable the user to select the style of the corner or the color of the displayed corner.
Still a further object is to provide such a device with a mirror and a comb supported thereon within the pocket and out of sight, the comb incidentally adding to the weight of the device to keep it down in the pocket.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device with an integral means for clamping the assembled device in the desired position to the upper edge of the front wall of the pocket.
I accomplish the foregoing, and other, objects by providing a shaped thin, flexible member of metal of relatively standardized dimensions readily to fill the entire pocket without protruding therefrom. About its upper end the corners to be displayed are readily attachable by an elastic band aflixed to or within the lower edge of the corners, the band being insertable in notches at the sides of the metal member. At least one face of the metal member is given a high polish to function as a mirror, and preferably a support integrally extending from the lower central region of the metal member serves to support a comb of which the upper end is held against the metal member surface by the band.
The instant invention will more readily be fully understood from the following description of a preferred embodiment shown in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a front view of the illustrative embodiment of the device;
Figure 2 is a section along line 2--2 of Figure 1; and
Figures 3, 4 and 5 show various types of corners used with the device of my invention.
The body 1 of my device is a sheet of metal which, while thin and springy, will still be adequately stiff to prevent buckling or collapsing, and is shaped and of such dimensions as to fit readily into a show pocket, for ex ample that of a mans coat, and substantially to occupy the vertical area of the pocket. At the upper end region of the body, a pair of notches 2, one at each side of the body, is provided in horizontal alignment. Centrally disposed and connected to the upper edge of the body an integral S-shaped springy clamp 3, relatively narrow as compared to the width of body 1 and hence in respect of the pocket, is adapted with its outer, and downwardly open, bend to be clamped on and to the upper edge of the outer wall of the handkerchief show pocket. The upwardly opening bend of the clamp 3, which is the nearer of the bends to the body 1, is adapted to receive in it the lower portion of the fabric corner 4 having an elastic 2 band 5 at or within its lower edge, afi'ixed in any desired way as by sewing. The elastic band Smay extend entirely alongthe lower edge region of corner 4 within the? fabric of' the corner and between its lower side tips 6 outside the fabric of the corner, or preferably to conserve elastic between such tips 6 outside of the fabric only.
The front 7of-the spring S-clamp 3, which will be exposed. to view in position, may be provided with any desired ornamentation, such as an initial, monogram, societyemblem, etc. The rear face 8 of the body 1 is preferably'highly polished, and if need be, given a mirror coating-. Centrally in the bottom edge of the body, a sm'all portion 9 is' punched and bent'back to project from the rearsurfaceSto form the support=as shown. A comb Eds-conveniently mountedon support 9'by havinga pair of adjacent teeth straddle the support so thatthe comb liesflat on. surface 82 and extends upwardly from' sup port 9. Inkplacing thedisplay corner: 4in position on body 1', the lower edge region of the fabric corner is pushed downwardly into the upwardly facing open bend of the spring clamp 3 and the band 5, in particular that portion thereof outside of the fabric of the corner and extending between the tips 6, is brought down to encircle body 1 and the upper end of comb 10 and to engage into the notches 2. The band 5 thus tightly, and yet readily removably, holds the display corner 4 on body 1, so that the display corner will retain its position and not slip further into the pocket at some later time. It will be noted that, provided the comb 10 is of sufiicient length, by positioning the support 9 between teeth further up on the comb, are latter may be permitted to extend below the lower edge of body 1 thereby adjusting the depth to which body 1 is insertable in a given pocket. As a general rule, I prefer, however, not to have the comb project below body 1.
In Figure 1 I show the corner 4 as having but one point which on insertion of body 1 into a pocket with clamp 3 attached to the front wall of the pocket will be displayed. At times the user of my device will desire to have a different type of fold showing, and hence I have made the corner 4 readily detachable from body 1 by the combination of the band 3 and the clamp 3 with its upwardly facing spring fold, into which the lower edge of the fabric corner readily fits and by which such lower edge region is clamped in position. Hence for a single body 1, I provide a plurality of corners such as, for example, those of Figure 3 with a straight edge display portion 11, of Figure 4 with two triangular points 12, and of Figure 5 with three triangular points 13. Each of the fabric corners of these figures similarly has the fabric band 5 at or about its lower edge region to tightly fit the tips thereof into notches 2 of the body.
Not only does the simulated show handkerchief device of my invention permit the display at all times of a neatly folded fabric corner, but it also provides a convenient mirror and comb. Since the mirror is the polished surface of a pliable sheet of metal, for example aluminum, it is of course unbreakable, and because of the mode of supporting the comb thereon, there is little or no chance to break the comb while in the pocket.
As has hereinbefore been stated, the above description and drawing are of an illustrative embodiment of my invention, and it is to be expressly understood that such are not by way of limitation in any respect, and that my invention is to be limited only by what is prior known. Various modifications, still within the spirit and scope of my invention, will readily suggest themselves to the skilled worker in the art, for example, the material of body 1 may also be of cardboard, plastic, or molded metal, or of any other material which is reasonably selfsustaining with a thickness dimension relatively small to its other dimensions, and the body need not be a solid area but may be a hollow area defined by its periphery, for example, of wire, plastic, etc., in a closed loop in the shape of the pocket, in which loop the mirror may be supported if so desired.
What I claim is:
1. A simulated show handkerchief device for use in pockets of garments comprising a flat area of material of such size and dimensions as to fit wholly within a pocket, a hook means integral with the central portion of the upper edge of the area and projecting from one face thereof, and having an upwardly facing open spring groove adjacent the area and a downwardly facing open spring groove remote from the area, the downwardly facing open spring groove being adapted to receive the upper edge of the front wall of the pocket, a fabric corner adapted to be displayed from the pocket and having a lower edge of substantially the width of the area and pocket, an elastic band attached to the sides of the lower edge of the fabric corner and extending therebetween, the bottom of the upwardly facing open spring groove being adapted to support the lower edge of the fabric corner and of one long side of the elastic band, and a pair of notches in the sides of the area near its upper end adapted to be positioned below the upper edge of the pocket on insertion of the area into the pocket, the upwardly facing groove being adapted removably to receive the lower edge region of the fabric corner with the elastic band about the face of the area opposite to that from which the hook means extends with the elastic band engaging the notches.
2. A simulated show handkerchief device according to claim 1 in which means are provided to vary the depth to which the area can be inserted into the pocket comprising an integral projection at the lower region of the area and a toothed member adapted to engage the projection between any two adjacent teeth thereof.
