MAN'S BREAST POCKET PLASTIC HANDKERCHIEF Filed Sept. 19, 1960 FIG.|
' INVENTOR. Z9 5 0 ggy M72504;
ATTORNEY United States Patent Ofifice 3,072,917 Patented Jan. 15, 1963 3,072,917 MANS BREAST POCKET PLASTIC HANDKERCHIEF Larry Watson, Jr., 18 Butler St., Brooklyn 31, NY. Filed Sept. 19, 1960, Ser. No. 56,869 2 Claims. (Cl. 2-279) This invention relates to breast pocket handkerchiefs.
As is well known, the folding and positioning of such handkerchiefs often present problems which are not easy of solution. Thus, such handkerchiefs frequently become displaced from their originally intended position within the breast pockets of mens jackets, so that they are hidden from view and hence, insofar as they are intended to serve an ornamental function, become of no utility. To remedy this difiiculty, it is conventional prac tice to resort to elaborate folding methods in order to serve as a support for the handkerchief in its intended position. Such folding, in combination with the particular style of fold of that portion of the handkerchief intended to be visible, require unduly complex operations. Moreover, even where the positioning and folding of conventional handkerchiefs are successful, they rapidly attract a great variety of dust and dirt particles so that they lose their original whiteness and must be replaced. The present invention overcomes these difficulties.
Accordingly, it is an object of this invention to provide an improved mans breast pocket handkerchief which may be folded in its intended position with a minimum of skill.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a handkerchief of the character indicated which may be easily positioned within the breast pocket of a conven-, tional mans jacket.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a handkerchief of the character indicated which is resistant to the accumulation of dirt and dust particles thereon.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a handkerchief of the character indicated which may be easily cleaned in the event that it becomes dirty.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a handkerchief of the character indicated which is adjustable within the breast pocket of a mans jacket so as to be supportable in a plurality of elevated positions.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a handkerchief of the character indicated which may be economically manufactured and which is simple in structural design.
Other and further objects of the present invention will become apparent from the following description as read in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
FIGURE 1 is a front elevational view of one embodiment of the present invention disposed within the breast pocket of a conventional man's jacket;
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of one member employed in the aforesaid embodiment of the invention;
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of said embodiment of the invention, wherein the member depicted in FIGURE 2 is shown in a folded position and provided with means for maintaining said folded position, said FIGURE 3 also depicting means for elevating the said member, said elevating means being illustrated in frontward relation to said member;
FIGURE 4 is a cross-sectional elevation taken about the line 44 of FIGURE 3 and looking in the direction of the arrows disposed in the vicinity of the ends of said line 44;
FIGURE 5 is a cross-sectional view taken about the line 5-5 of FIGURE 3 and looking in the direction of the arrows disposed in the vicinity of the ends of said line 5-5.
As shown in the drawing, one embodiment of the invention may be employed within the breast pocket 10 of a conventional jacket, generally designated by the numeral 11. The said embodiment of the invention, generally designated by the numeral 12, comprises a foldable member 13 which is preferably composed of a thin sheet of plastic embossed with an imitation cotton or linen finish, preferably of plastic construction and in simulation of a conventional handkerchief. One marginal perimetral portion 13a of said linen finish is provided with a hem, also in simulation of the hem of a conventional handkerchief. The said sheet is folded upon itself, as at 14, so as to form a member of double thickness and is then again folded upon itself, as at 15 and 16, so as to form a mem ber having four thicknesses of said sheet material, thereby simulating a customary folding frequently encountered in conventional handkerchiefs.
When folded as aforesaid, the sheet will assume the position depicted in FIGURE 3 and will present the appearance of a conventional handkerchief. To maintain said folded position, the sheet is provided with a plurality of apertures 13b receiving eyelets 17, which, as shown in FIGURE 4, are flanged against the frontward and rearward external peripheries of said folded member. The eyelets are preferably aligned in vertical columns, as depicted in FIGURES 3 and 4, and removably receive a plurality of projecting members 18 which depend from a pair of planar elements 19. Said projecting elements are provided with bulbous terminations 20 which may be snapped into assembled position with said eyelets. It will be noted that the said terminations may be composed of a yieldable resilient plastic material, to facilitate the entry thereof within said eyelets and withdrawal of said terminations therefrom. The position of the abovedescribed form of the invention within the breast pocket may be adjusted, as desired by the user, by varying the particular projections which are received within the eyelets 17.
Since the surface of the above-described device presents a relatively smooth finish, such as is commonly encountered in conventional plastic materials, it will not attract dirt and dust as rapidly as the cloth of conventional handkerchiefs. Moreover, even when such plastic surface does acquire dirt and dust, it may be quickly cleaned as by wiping or even by suitable Washing Without the necessity of unfolding the sheet 13 or otherwise disturbing its assembled position. Furthermore, it can be quickly dried and replaced for operative use in the aforesaid breast pocket.
The embodiment of the invention illustrated and described hereinabove has been selected for the purpose of clearly setting forth the principles involved. It will be apparent, however, that the present invention is susceptible to being modified in respect to details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which may be resorted to without departure from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. An improved handkerchief comprising in combination, a flexible plastic sheet disposed in a plurality of folds and provided with a surface finish simulative of a textile fabric material, said folds being maintained by a plurality of columns of vertically aligned eyelets received within apertures formed in said plastic sheet, each of said eyelets including a pair of flanges abutting upon the frontward and rearward external peripheries of the plastic sheet when it is disposed in its said plurality of folds, a pair of planar elements disposed externally of said folded plastic sheet and provided with projecting members for engagement With said eyelets, each of said projecting members being characterized by a bulbous termination composed of a resilient plastic material, the said planar elements being disposable in vertical supporting contact with the interior surface of the breast pocket of ajacket.
2'. A handkerchief comprising a flexible folded sheet material member, two laterally spaced vertical rows of eyelets provided in the folded portions of said member and retaining the latter in folded condition, each of said eyelets having enlarged heads at the opposite ends thereof overlying the adjacent surface portion of said member, and a pair of elongated members each provided with a vertical row of projections for selective engagement with the eyelets in one of said rows.
