COMBINED DISPLAY AND MATCH PACKAGE HOLDER Filed Oct.- 24, 1940 Patented Sept. 2, 1941 TENT OFFICE COMBINED DISPLAY AND MATCH PACKAGE HOLDER Gerhardt 0. Lebrenz, North Tonawanda, N. Y. Application October 24, 1940, Serial No. 362,649
7 Claims. 206-33) This invention relates to a combined display and match package holder.
The invention aims to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of the class referred to including provisions for not only holding a removable display, but also for removably holding a match package.
The invention further aims to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of the class referred to including provisions for. connecting it to a match package of the book type, as well as provisions for making it possible for a person to View or look at a picture of a loved one, a friend or a pet when handling the package or when a match is removed and ignited.
The invention further aims to provide a device for the purposes set forth which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable and compact, readily installed with respect to a match package, distinctive in appearance, attractive, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
Embodying the aims aforesaid and others which may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed. I
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a combined display and match package holder, in. accordance with this invention showing the adaptation thereof with respect to a match package,
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the structure shown in Figure 1,
Figure 3 is an elevation looking towards the inner face of a match package when extended and showing the adaptation with the package of the device in accordance with this invention; the package and device being broken away at several points and the device partly shown in section.
Figure 4 is a section on line 44 Figure 1,
Figure 5 is a section on line 5-5 Figure 1,
Figure 6 is a section on line 66 Figure 3,
Figure 7 is a rear elevation of the blank from which the display holder is formed,
Figure 8 is a rear elevation of the blank from which the clamp is formed.
With reference to the drawing, there is shown a match package of the book type, which consists of a body part Ill of strip-like form bent upon itself to provide a back II and a front or cover I2, and a fold I3 opposing the inner face of the lower portion of the back I I. The fold I3 is provided with a match igniting surface I4. The bend between the back II and front I2 is indicated at I5, and the bend between the back I I and fold I3 is indicated at I6. Arranged between the back II and the fold I3 is a carrier I! having integral therewith a series of matches I8 capable of being readily severed from the carrier. The carrier I1 is arranged in close proximity to the bend I6 and it is secured by holdfast means I9 to theback I I and fold I3. The front I2 is of less length than the backl I and its free end is capable of being inserted between the fold I3 and the lower portions'of the matches for detachably holding the front closed. The foregoing match package is of the form now in general use and it is illustrated for the purpose of showing the adaptation therewith of the device in accordance with this invention.
The combined display and match package hold er, in accordance with this invention includes a foldable carrier 2!] of strip-like form and set up from anysuitable material, such as leather or fabric. The carrier is positioned against the outer face of the body part III and it is of a width greater than the width of said body part. The end 2| of the carrier 20 is spaced inwardly from the free end 22 of the front I2. The other end 23 of the carrier 20 extends beyond the bend I B.
The'front I2 and carrier 20 are connected together by a clamping element 24, preferably formed of thin bendable metallic material. The element 24 consists of a rectangular flat platelike body 25 having integral with its sides a pair of oppositely disposed inwardly extending folds 25, 26 which overlap and are spaced from the outer face of body 25. The carrier 20 is inserted between the body 25 and the folds 26, 26. The element 24 is to be permanently secured to the end terminal parts 28 of those portions 28 of the carrier 20 which extend laterally in opposite directions from the said front I2 of the match package. for securing the element 24 and carrier 20 together, and by way of example the said body 25 is swaged as at 28 to engage in said terminal parts 28 whereby the carrier and element 24 are secured together. It is to be understood that the folds 26, 26 may be swaged instead of the body 25, or that the said body 25 and. the said folds may be swaged. That portion of the body 25 ad- Any suitable meansmay be employed jacent the points of securance between such body and the carrier 20 is spaced from the inner face of the latter. The said front l2 of the match package is inserted through the: aforesaid space whereby the match package is removably connected to the carrier. The foregoing arrangement provides for the easy introduction of the front [2 of the match package under element 24 and the carrier 20. The body portion 25 of the element 24 has an edge disposed slightly beyond the end 2| of the carrier 20.
The device includes a holder element for the display, which also constitutes a means for clamping the back II and carrier 20 together. The said element is generally indicated at 21 and is constructed from thin bendable metallic material. The element 21 comprises a rectangular body portion 28 formed in proximity to one end with a transversely disposed rectangular slot 29. Integral with the sides of the body portion 28 is a pair of oppositely disposed folds 30, 3|, which oppose the outer face of said body portion 28. Integral with the lower end of body portion 28 and opposing its outer face is a fold 32 arranged between the lower ends of the folds 30, 3|. The ends of the fold 32 opposes the lower ends of the folds 30, 3! and the opposed ends of the folds 3|], 3| and 32 are mitered, as at 33. The upper ends of the folds 30, 3| are squared. Formed integral with the upper part of the inner side edge of the fold 33 is a coupling strap 34, which extends at right angles to said fold 39 to a point across and beyond the upper portion of the outer face of the fold 3| and said strap is bent around the fold 3| and positioned against the upper part of the inner face of the body portion 28, as indicated at 35. The folds 30, 3|, 32 and strap 34 coact to provide a frame positioned on the outer face of that portion of the carrier 20, which is disposed against the outer face of the back. That portion of the outer face of the carrier 20, which is opposed by the folds 30, 3| and 32 and the strap 34 constitutes the back of the aforesaid frame and is reinforced by said body portion 28.
The bends between the body portion 28 and folds 38, 3|, 32 are indicated at 36 and they are of a width to space such folds from the outer face of the carrier 23. The frame provided in a manner as referred to is adapted to receive the object to be displayed and by way of example such object is shownas a photograph or picture and indicated at 31. The object 31 is removably mounted in the frame. There is also positioned in the frame a transparent panel 38 forwardly of the object 31. The object 31 and panel 38 are removably mounted in the frame.
The slot-29 is provided for inserting the body part of the match package between the carrier 20 and the aforesaid body portions 25 and 28, which permits of removably connecting the match package to the device.
The body portion 28 of the element 21 below the slot 29 is formed with a pair of spaced outset portions 39-, which constitute stops and function to prevent the match package from slipping out of the device. The stops 39 are arranged in the path of the bend l6 when the. match package is removably connected to the device.
The element 21 is formed of what may be termed an outer and an inner side or outer and inner portion. The outer side is of frame-like contour for removably confining the object to be displayed against the outer face of the carrier 20. The inner side is in the form of a sheet-like body for extension across the inner face of the body part In of the match package. The said sides are so related to removably connect the carrier 20 and body part together.
Although the elements 24 and 21 have been referred to as being formed from metallic material, yet it is to be understood that either or both may be in the form of a one-piece molded plastic body of Celluloid or Bakelite of the desired color.
