MAT-LOCK AND SGRAPER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,795, dated December 26, 1882.

To all whom it mag/concern:

Beit. known that I, JEREMIAH J. KING, acitizen of the United States, residingat NewYork, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mat-Locks and Scrapers, of which the followy ing is a specification.

lThis invention relates to that class of matloeking devices for which l filed an application for Letters Patent on or about the 17th dayof May, 1882; and it consists in providing one of the ja-ws ofthe link with a toot-.sor-aper, as hereinafter described, so that when the link is fastened to a mat the scraper is thereby held in a position for use.

This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side view, partly in section, showing the link applied to a mat. Fig. 2 is a. plan or top view.

Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.

The letter A designates the mat, and B the link, serving to receive achain for locking the mat to the desired part of a building. This link is composed of two jaws, D E, which are connected together at one end by a pivot, j', or other suitable means, and at the other end by a post, g, which is a fixture of one jaw, and receives in it a screw, h, countersunk in thel other jaw.. "he screw li, however, can be omitted, in which case the post g is riveted to the appropriatejaw. One of the jaws, moreover, is provided with a tooth,'i, which passes through the mat, together with the post g, and serves to hold the link against. turning on the post.

The letter J indicates a foot-scraper combined with the jaw D of the link. ThisA scraper consists ot a blade of sheet metal or other suitable material. and extends nearly the entire length of the link, it being secured to the back of the jaw D approximately at a right angle thereto, and hence if the jaw D is brought above the mat,-as shown, in fastening the link thereto the scraper is thereby held upright in position for use, thus forming a highly useful auxiliary tothe mat. In the ex. ample shown -the scraper is held to the jaw l) by being riveted t-o lugs o thereon; but this purpose can be accomplished in various other ways, which will readily suggest themselves to a skilled mechanic.

The object ot' using the screw h is to allow the link to be detached from the mat when the latter is worn out, and to be applied to a new A mat.

What l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The link herein described, having one of its jaws provided with a foot-scraper adapted to take a position for use when the link is applied to a mat.
