SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 274,726, dated `March 27,1883.

To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, ANeUs CRAWFORD, a subject of Great -Britaimresiding at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Express-Sgnalmot' which the following Iis a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof. v
My invention consists of an improved form of express-signals in which the signal-arms are operated by means of levers and ratchets; and the object of my invention is to provide aconvenient and conspicuous mode of signaling for the various express companies, &c., to

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l givesa side view of the express-signal, showing how it isoperated. A is the lever. B is the fulcrum of the lever. C is the line or chain connecting lever with signal-arm. D D are frictionrol1ers over which the line C works. E E show one signal-arm extended and the others lowered. F is aratchet holdingthe lever in place. Gr is the thumb-'piece for lowering the signal-arm. H is a spring at the back of the thumb-piece.

Having fullyr described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. An express-signal consisting of arms E, adapted to Work on one common pivot, and operated, by means of cords C, over rollers D D by levers A and ratchets F, substantially as described.'
2. In combination with an express-signal having arms E, the levers A,I rollers D D, cords C, ratchets F, and thumb-pieces Gr, substantially as and for the purpose described.
