SECURING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J. LORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Michelson, in the county of Roscommon and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Securing Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to. which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in securing devices and more particularly to an automatic clamp for engaging a rope or cable or wire of any size.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of the class described, which may be readily engaged with a rope cable or wire when it is desired to pull the same and which may be readily moved along said rope cable or wire in one direction, when it is desired to secure a new grip thereon.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will be hereinafter more clearly made apparent in the specification and.
pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown the preferred form which my invention may take.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view showing my improved form of securing device in position upon a rope. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, and, Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of a portion of the clamp.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 4 and 5 are a pair of arms arranged obliquely to one another and pivoted at 6. Each end of the arm 4 is preferably bifurcated, the bifurcations of one end extending on opposite sides of the arm 5 and pivotally secured thereto, as just described. The outer end 7 of the arm 5 is likewise bifurcated for a purpose hereinafter clearly set forth, while the opposite end thereof is extended beyond the pivot point 6 and is provided with a looped portion 8, for a purpose hereinafter more clearly set forth.
Pivotally secured between the bifurcated ends of the arms 4 and 5 are lever arms 9 and 10 of the clamp members 11 and 12, respectively. The clamp portions 11 and 12 are extended upwardly from the lever arms 9 and 10 and the adjoining faces of said clamp members are provided with ways 13 Specification of Letters Patent.

therein. The ways 13 are preferably semicircular in cross sectlon and downwardly and outwardly flaring, as clearly shown in Fig.
3, so as to allow the clamp members to be employed for engaging ropes or cables of difierent sizes.
The clampingmember 12 is slightly wider than the clamp 11 and is provided with projecting ends 14-, which pass upon opposite sides of the clamping member 11. The ends 14: are provided with notches 15, which preferably extend from the lower portion of said ends upwardly and rearwardly thereof and then forwardly thereof, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
The clamping member 11 is provided upon opposite sides with outwardly extending lugs 16, which are adapted to be engaged in said notches 15.
When it is desired to utilize my improved device, the clamping members 11 and .12 are separated and positioned upon opposite sides of the wire, rope or cable. The lugs 16 are then positioned in the notches 15 and a hook (not shown) connected to any desired source of power is then engaged with the loop 8 and the rope or cable may be then drawn forwardly. When it is desired to secure a new grip upon the wire, rope or cable, it is only necessary to take hold of the looped end 8 and slide the device longitudinally of the rope, the clamping members 11 and 12 being automatically disengaged from the rope when the device is moved in such direction. After the device has been re-positioned the same may be drawn forwardly again and such movement of the device will cause the clamping members 11 and 12 to automatically reengage said wire, rope or cable. With a device constructed in accordance with my invention, it will be seen that the.
greater the pull upon the loop 8 the greater will be the clamping action of the members 11 and 12.
While I have shown the preferred form which my invention may take, I desire it to be understood that I may make various modifications therein without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. For instance I may provide a suitable chain to be attached to the end of the arm 5 extended past the pivot 6, in order to adapt my invention for use with a small block and line, and accordingly dispense with the handhold 8.
What I claim as new is:
1. A securing device comprising;a pivoted member having one end bifurcated with registering apertures through the bifurcations, and the opposite end offset with an aperture at the offset point, and having a looped portion, a second pivoted member having both ends bifurcated with registermg apertures through the bifurcations the apertures of one of the bifurcated ends registering with the aperture at the offset point, pivot means pivotally connecting said pivoted members ,at said last mentioned registering apertures, and clamping means remov ably pivoted at their inner ends and pivoted at their outer ends to the free bifurcated ends of each of said pivoted members by means of pivot connections mounted through apertures in the said outer ends of the clamping means adapted to register with the aper tures in said bifurcated ends, said clamping means having upwardly extending members with flaring, semi-circular Ways l ongitudr nally therein adapted to clamp and secure a wire, rope, cable, or the like.
2. A securing device, comprising; pivotally connected arms, one of said arms having an offset looped portion, and the free ends of both of said arms bifurcated with registering apertures through said bifurcations, a clamping member with a longitudinal, semi-circular wire, rope or cable engaging way, said clamping member having an arm, the outer end of which is pivotally connected to the bifurcated end of one of said pivoted arms through the registering apertures, said arm having projecting lugs upon the opposite sides thereof, and a second clamping member with a longitudinal, semi-circular wayadapted to clamp a wire, rope or cable upon the opposite side to that of the first mentionedway, said second men tioned clamping member having an arm ex tending. from ,one side, the outer end of which is pivotally connected to the free bifurcated end of theoppo'site, pivoted arm through therregistering apertures therein, and a pair of spaced, parallel arms extending from theopp'osite side,,each last mentioned arm having an 7 obliquely sloping notch with a necess'ed seat therein adapted to seat over one, of the lugs of the arm of said first. mentioned clamping" member .to permit ofreinovable pivoted connection between both of said clamping members.
