Description

s. A.-HUNTER.
WRENCH. APPLICATION FILED MAY 15, 1915.
1,164,815. Patented Dec. 1915.
UNITED STATES PATENTOFFICE. I
SIN [ON A. HUNTER, OF GRIFFIN, SASKATCHEWAN, CANADA.
WRENCH.
b all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SIMON A. HUNTER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at use in holding a harrow tooth or the like stationary while the fastening nut is screwed on or off.
The invention has for its primary object a durable and efficient construction of device of this character, the parts of which are so arranged that they may be readily adjusted. according to the particular length or size of tooth to be attached or detached and the invention further aims to generally improve devices of this class so as to render them more useful and commercially desirable.
With these and other objects in view, as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter more fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention,
reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in Which- Figure Lis a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention,
"the wrench being shown in applied position.
Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the brace employed. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the head, Fig. 4 is a detail view of the handle. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the reducers, and Fig. 6 is a Side elevation of the socket with a portion of the shank shown in section.
Corresponding and like parts are referred in the following description and designated in all of the views of the accompany ing drawing by like reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the shank of my improved a wrench, a handle 2 being connected by a nut 3 or similar fastening device to one end 0 said shank, and extending in opposite-direction therefrom, as clearly illustrated in the drawing, the opening in the handle through which the shank 1 extends being squared or- Specification of Letters Patent.
In order to hold the tooth firmly while the nut is screwed on oroff, I provide a brace which embodies a longitudinally extending portion 5, one end of which is turned laterally as at G, and is provided atits extremity with an apertured eye 7 loosely Patented Dec. 21, 1915.
Application filed May 15, 1915. Serial No. 28,486. I
The i mounted upon the shank 1, the other or-- lower end of the brace 4 being also laterally turned and constituting a foot 8 which is forked or bifurcated, as indicated at 9,
whereby it may receive and straddle the harrow tooth and hold the same firmly While the fastening nut is applied or being removed.
A set collar 10 is mounted upon the shank 1, and is designed to be secured thereon in different positions by means of a set screw 11, said collar being disposed underneath the eye 7 andbrace 4, whereby it may be adjusted up and down and the forked foot 9 heldin the required position to engage the harrow tooth, according to the length or size of the latter.
From the foregoing description iii-connection with the accompanying drawing, the operation of my improved wrench will be apparent. In the practical use of the device, the set collar 10 is adjusted, according to the size of harrow tooth to be removed or attached, whereby the brace 4 will have its foot 9 properly engaged with the tooth and as the brace and shank 1 are loosely con nected together so far as the rotatable movement of the latter is concerned, it will at once he understood that by turning the handle 2' and the head 3 which is operatively connected thereto, the nut receiyed in the socket of the head may be easily screwed off of or onto the tooth.
Preferably in order to )rovide for nuts -o different sizes, reducers are provided. These thereto, but that various changes may be made in the construction, arrangements and proportions of the parts without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims. 'lVhat is claimed, is:
1. A wrench of the character described,
comprising a shank provided at one end with a work receiving head, a collar adjustably mounted on said shank, and a brace loosely mounted upon theshank above said collar and provided below the head with a bifurcated foot, for the purpose specified.
2. A wrench of the cha'acter described, comprising a shank provided at one end with a handle and at its other end with a.
3. A wrench of the character described,-
comprising 'a'shank provided at one end with a handle and at its other end with a head formed with a socket, a brace having one end laterally extended and formed with an ear loosely mounted upon said shank, and at its other end with a laterally extending bifurcated foot adapted to engage the work, a collar adjustably mounted upon said shank between'the head and the ear, and aset screw working through. said collar and designed to hold the same in adjusted position on the shank, as and for the purpose specified.
4. A wrench of the character described, comprising a shank provided at one end with a work IOCQlYlIlgllOzHl, a brace loosely mounted upon the shank and provided with a work engagmgloot, and means for holding the brace in different positions upon the "shank.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature 1n the presence of two witnesses.
SIMON A. HUNTER.
