Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
NATHANIEL W. VANDEGRIFT, OF BRIDGEPORT. CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO FRANK ARMSTRONG, OF SAME PLACE.
PIPE-VISEQ SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,141, dated December 12, 1882 Application filed October 3, 1882. (No model) To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, NATHANIEL W. VAN- DEGRIFT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, Fairlield county, Connectiout, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Vises, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to certain new and useful improvemcntsin pipe-Vises; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the parts hereinafter described in detail and specifically claimed.
In order that those skilled in the art to which my invention relates may know how to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring by letters to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a front elevation of a pipe vise o embodying my invention, and Fig.2 an edge or side view of the same.
Similar lettersindicatelike parts in the two figures.
A represents the bed of the frame, which is adapted to be'secnred, when desired, to any snitable'bench or platform by screws or bolts at a. j
The lower portion of the frame B is formed preferably integral with the base, and has on each ofitsinneredgesa rib or tongue, b, (shown in dottedlines,) around and over which the lower gripping'jaw, O, is secured by the bolt D, the said jaw being made of two portions,
- adapted to be placed from opposite sides and 5 drawn together by the bolt or rivet D in the usual manner. This lower portion, B. of the frame is also cast with a laterally-projecting lip, E, on each side, to catch and hold alatch,
F, presently referred to., It is also formed 40 with one portion of a hingejoint, G, on each side, adapted torecei've the other leaf of binge formed on one side of the upperportion, B, of the frame, which is provided at the top with a-screw, I, connected by a swivel, c, to aplaten, J, the edges of which are grooved to straddle the inside edges of the frame B, so that (1 d the upper jaw, 0. Hence the movement of the screw 1 will cause the jaw O to apo proach or recede' from the lower stationary jaw, O, in an obvious manner.
The upper portion, B, of the frame issecured to the lower portion, B, through the medium of the hinge-leaves GH and pintle 5 e and a gravity-latch, F, which is hinged to the upper portion of the frame atf, the lower end of thelatch being adapted to interlock with the lip E, as clearly shown.
It will be observed that, as represented in the drawings, the hinge-joint between the parts B and B is on the right-hand side, and that the leaves Gron the opposite side of the frame B are at such time idlers; but it frequently occurs thatit is desirable'to reverse the wrench, 6 and in such case, as they are at present constructed, the entire structure has to be turned or its position changed. It. not vunfrequently happens, owing to contracted places in which it may be used, that this change becomes ex- 0' ceedingly difficult and sometimes impossible; but in the use of my improved vise the end can be accomplished by simply removing the pintle e and transferring the hinge-leaf H over to the other or left-hand side of the machine, within the leaves G on that side,'and inserting the pintle e. Thelatch F, then b eingon the right hand instead of the left of the machine, coacts with the other lip, E, to lock thetwo portions of the frame in position.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is t The upper portion, B, of the frame, formed with a hinge-leaf on one side and provided with a pivoted latch, F, on the opposite side, in combination with the lower portion, 13, of the frame, formed with hinged leaves G and lips E on both sides, whereby the upper portion may be reversed, substantially as set forth.
In testimonywhereofl have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
NATHANIEL W. VANDEGRIFT.
