danseressen? uw noenr-eneess.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. dated Mey 12, 1874; application filed To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BURnows, of New York, in the count;r of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Checks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,
reference being had to theaccompanying' drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part ot' this specification.
rIhe nature of my invention-consists in the construction and arrangement of a door-bolt with check-bar, in which the check-bar is made solid without any slot, but of a form to correspond with theperiorations inthe end of the bolt used, the bottom ot' said bar being constructed to enter said perforations in the bolt, and the bar, being hinged, is constructed to forni a stop for the bolt whensaid bar is turned back, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed yto describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view cfa device embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 isy a side elevation of the same.
A represents the doer frame or casing, and I3 the door-hinge, as usual, to one side thereof. On the inner side of the door B, near. the outer edge, is secured a horizontal bed-plate,
l, provided with suitable guide-loops aI a, in which the boltD moves, said bolt bein g,between the loops, provided with a thumb-piece, Z1. rIhe outer end ot' the bolt D is provided with a slot or hole, d, from the outer edge inward for a suitable distance, as shown. 0n the doorframe A, opposite to the end of the bolt, is secured a plate, E, upon which are two L-shaped projections, c e, forming an open keeper for the entrancefof the head of the bolt D, when moved outward to bolt the door. G represents the check-bar, made in any suitable April 2, 1874.
form, to enter the slot d in the end of the bolt, and provided at its outer end with a projection or stop, f. At the inner end ofthe checkbar G is an eccentrically-formed cross-bar, h, provided with a journal at each end, which journals have their bearings in suitable boxes formed in the plate E. The check-bar G, in its normal position, is thrown back, when the cross-bar h forms a stop for the movement et' the bolt, to hold the end thereof under the projections e e. Then, if anybody des' es ad* mittance, and it is desired to see who the outside party is before opening the door fully, the cheek-bar G is thrown outward or forward, so as to enter the slot d in the bolt. rll'he bolt, with the cheek-bar in the slot thereof, is then moved so as io clear the projections e c, when the door can be opened the lengt-h of the check-bar, the bolt sliding thereon until it strikes the stopf. It' it'is then desired to admit the outside party the door will first be pushed to, and the cheek-bar G thrown back, when the bolt can be withdrawn, andthe door fully opened.
The advantages of this device are apparent, and need no description.
I ani aware that a slotted check-bar is not new, and I do not, therefore, broadly cla-ini such device; but
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the slotted bolt D and the solid bar G, having the eccentrica-Ilyfornied cross-bar h, which acts as a stop for the bolt when the bar is turned back, substantially as and for the purpose herein speciiied.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing' as my own I aftix my signature in presence ot' two witnesses.
WILLIAM BURRO-WS' fitnesses J. S. Prnnsoiv, J oniv H. Srrr'r
