To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, XAWERY F. SwIDER- SKI, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Kenosha, in the county of Kenosha and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention consists in what is herein particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims of this specification, its object being to provide simple, economical and etlicient locks especially designed for sliding doors and which may be readily manufactured to require a different-design of key for each.

Figure l of the drawings represents a side elevation of a lock partly in section in accordance with my invention and its application to secure a sliding door in closed position; Fig. 2, a horizontal sectional view on the plane indicated by line 2 2 in Fig. l; Fig. 3, a similar view showing the door released; Fig. 4C, a sectional view indicated by line l-l in Fig. l.

Referring by numerals to the drawings G in the first three figures indicates a fragment of a side of a barn or other building and 7 a fragment of a sliding door. Held by screws or otherwise suitably secured to the building is the casing 9 of one of my improved locks. This casing has a removable side 9 and is provided with guideways for a horizontal slide bolt l0 and gravity blocks l1, l2, these blocks being engageable with notches provided in the bolt. There are preferably two pair of notches in the bolt at a suitable distance apart, and the blocks are normally in engagement with one or the other pair of said notches according to the adjusted position of said bolt, which same extends at all times through the casing and is limited as to play in opposite directions by laterally projecting stops 13 thereon.

The casing and the gravity blocks are provided with registering ways for a key 14. These ways in the casing afford lifting clearance for the key while those in the blocks being of variable area to match corresponding variations of key design so as to require a key of different design for each Specification of Letters Patent. By insertion and lift of the key in the casing, the gravity blocks are disengaged with the registering notches in the bolt, thus permitting the'latter to be moved from its previously adjusted position. In Fig. l, the bolt is shown in locking position from which it may be released by the key and again caught by the blocks in unlocking position, said bolt in the showing being provided with two pair of notches so disposed that one or the other pair is registrable with.said blocks according to the adjustment of the aforesaid bolt. It is within the scope of my invention to employ but one block or more than two and to correspondingly notch the bolt with respect to securing the same in one or both positions of its adjustment.

The sliding door bolt 10 is in two sections that have matching beveled and shouldered meeting ends so as to be interlocking and flush, as herein shown, the section l0 being in hinge connection with a bar l5 fastened to the door. then the bolt is released from locking position in the casing and the door moved to have the bolt section therewith clear the casing 9, said bolt-section is swung outward, as shown in- Fig. 3, to permit of said door being moved to full open position. Prior to full closing position of the door the bolt-sections are engaged, the section permanently with the casing 9 freed from the gravity blocks that held it in unlocking position and on full closing of said door said bolt, as a whole, is caught by said blocks in locking position.

I claim:

l. A lock comprising a casing, a notched horizontal bolt in sections having flush match interlocking meeting ends, one of the sections being in permanent sliding engagement with the casing and the other section provided with an attaching bar to which it is hinged, and a gravity block slidable in the casing to engage the bolt notch, said casing and block being provided with registering ways for a block-lifting key.
